A Sugary Sweet Baby Shower For the Sugar Family

Here at Sugar HQ, we have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of Baby Sugar #2. Lisa, the queen of all things Sugar, has developed a perfectly round bump and big sister Katie is ready for her lil sister's arrival. To honor the sweet family, we decided to use the obvious - confections galore.

For the centerpiece of the soiree, I provided the expectant parents a diaper cake chock full of delicious delights. Since we don't want to leave the sibling out of the celebration, I made a miniature version for her. To keep the guests from attacking the decor, we provided Kara's Cupcakes and sparkling apple cider.

To see what the diaper cake is made of,

Using Pampers Swaddlers, I formed the base of the cake. Around each layer, I tied a piece of twine and covered it with a pink gingham ribbon. Atop of that, I used a hot glue gun to apply Bubble Gum tape. To add a bit of color, I glued on Necco wafers to each layer. Since most everyone loves a Dum Dum, I placed one in every other diaper. For the cake topper, I took a bottle, filled it with Skittles and tied a bow on top. To keep it all stacked together, I created columns with bamboo skewers and then wrapped it up with pink tulle and a puffed out ribbon.

For the smaller sibling cake, I made one layer with the same diapers and tied a ribbon around it. Instead of hyping wee Katie up on candy, I used four fake flowers for the centerpiece and limited her faux pastry with one Dum Dum and a candy necklace. More than anything, it was a treat for us to watch her open her own gift.

Sibling Shower: Gift Guide

While a sibling shower's goal is to get the guest of honor used to the idea of being a big brother or sister so no gifts are required, but those wanting to bring a lil something should purchase a present for the child, not the mama-to-be. We've rounded up a few of our favorite things when it comes to getting tots excited about welcoming a wee one into the family! To check out the details on these options,

Sibling Shirts: There are a ton of big brother, lil sister shirts on the market these days, but my new favorite is Babybot's collection. The modern tees ($18) are well made, to the point and then have a special lil comment (coolest) or (cutest) printed beneath the title.
Doll and Baby Carrier: Pottery Barn Kids offers plush Abby and Lucy dolls for even the smallest tots. A personalized carrier ($16) allows kids to take care of their babe the way mama and papa tend to the new family member.
Baby Bottle: Big siblings like to take on tasks like feeding their wee brother or sister so purchasing a bottle for just them to use makes them feel important.
Sophie the Giraffe: This sweet toy ($16) is the perfect one for a big sibling to use to entertain the new addition. It's easy for youngsters to hold and will keep both children entertained.

Sibling Shower: Favors

Once the sibling-to-be has been celebrated, the babes in blankets have been enjoyed and baby bingo has been played, it's time to bid the wee guests goodbye with a parting gift. In lieu of loot bags of plastic goodies, opt to tempt tots' taste buds with a crunchy chocolaty treat - hand dipped chocolate pretzel sticks.

This favor can be made up a couple of days in advance. Purchase pretzel rods, chocolate chips or disks and sprinkles. Melt the chocolate in a double boiler, then dip the rods in the sweet partially covering them and then shake with colored sugar or sprinkles for a decorative touch. Place them on a greased baking sheet and allow them to firm up. After, portion a handful of the finished treats into cellophane bags and tie them off with a ribbon.

Sibling Shower: Games and Activities

Once you've gathered a few lil ones to celebrate the soon-to-be big sis or brother's sibling shower, let the games begin! To hold tots' attention, keep the activities short and engaging. Start with a round of baby bingo to familiarize the future sibling with items that the family's newest addition will need.

You can download this very design for your party here! All you have to do is click on the links below to download the PDFs and print from your computer. You will need:

Bingo card set one and set two to pass out to guests (each print out has a card for two players). Youngsters can cover the items called with M&M's.
Bingo icons, which you will print and cut with scissors.

Next, play a "guess the number of gummi bears in a bottle" game. Fill a glass bottle with gummi bears, which you have counted, then pass it around and have guests write down their guess of how many yummy gummis you've crammed into the space. Use this customized Gummi Bear Bottle Game sheet to record the guesstimates. And, award prizes to the winners.

Sibling Shower: Food and Beverage

It's time to eat at our sibling shower (small soiree that gets the future big sis or bro used to the idea of having another wee one in the family)! Set out a spread fit for the family's queen bee or lil king. Tempt tots' appetites by playing to a few of the sibling-to-be's favorite foods with a twist. Our menu is made up of swaddled babies also known as babes in blankets, classic macaroni and cheese bowls, and baby carrots with ranch dip. Let lil ones wash it down with some fresh squeezed lemonade and indulge in a pint-size party treat - cookie ice cream sandwiches! Adults will likely nosh and get nostalgic about these childhood staples.

For the recipes,

Babes in blankets: Buy your favorite brand of cocktail weenies and roll them in a store-bought pastry dough cut into triangles Place them on a cooking sheet and pop them in the oven to bake. Allow the concoctions to cool and then create wee faces with an edible ink pen. Condiments like ketchup, mustard and relish can be used to decorate the blankets with pinstripes, floral patterns, and polkadots. Pair it with your child's choice of mac and cheese and baby carrots with ranch dip.

Cookie Ice Cream Sandwiches: Purchase a pack of Immaculate Baking Company's Triple Chocolate Chunk Cookies or another flavor of your choosing. After baking the cookies and allowing them to cool, scoop a ball of ice cream (I used Alden's Organic Mint Chocolate Chip) in the center of one cookie, top with another, and then press the two together until it forms a sandwich. Pour sprinkles or colored sugar on a plate and roll the edges of the sandwich around to collect the decoration. Place the finished goodies back in the freezer to firm up and then serve.

Sibling Shower: Shower Attire

Leave the baby doll dress in the closet and pull out something sassy yet sensible for the expecting sibling-to-be's baby shower. Leggings and a long knit tunic will provide the comfort and stretch that a pregnant mama needs to chase after her eldest child. Keep the jewelry simple as tots are prone to tug at elongated necklaces and dangling earrings. Heels may work for Katie Holmes and her crew, but flats will work just fine for this toddler-filled fiesta.
