Getting Busy More May Improve Chance of Conception

Wanna-be-parents who have limited sex on schedule to improve their chances of conception might want to toss their thermometers and hop into bed! New research shows that couples engaging in daily sex prior to ovulation may have increased chances of seeing two pink lines on the pregnancy stick. One report said:

Reported Tuesday at the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) meeting in Amsterdam, the study involved 118 men suffering from "higher-than-normal" genetic damage to the sperm. The study led by Australia's David Greening of IVF Sydney in Wollongong found that after a week of daily sex, genetically damaged sperm dropped by an average of 26% among the men.

The sperm's shortened exposure to oxygen could have also factored into the results.

Does Waiting to Find Out the Sex Make It Easier to Accept?

I've never heard of a parent who found out her baby's sex in the delivery room and was disappointed. That's why when people ask my advice, I say to wait . . . especially if the impending mom or pop has a clear preference. I know both men and women who had their hearts set on a son or daughter and were a bit bummed when their ultrasound indicated otherwise. All parents eventually realized how lucky they were to be having healthy offspring.

But when the infant makes his or her debut and "It's a boy!" or "It's a girl" is announced, I'm convinced it's near impossible for parents to pull themselves away from the awe-inspiring moment to focus on anatomy. Do you think this is true?

Couples trying to reignite the flame in their stale relationships sometimes make a sex pact to help them light the spark. On Desperate Housewives, Tom and Lynette made an agreement to have sex every day for a month no matter what the circumstance. Sixty-seven percent of lilsugar readers said they do the deed once a week or more frequently so some mamas don't need the nudge. While the pact is a nice theory, it seems a tad unrealistic for some parents. Do you think you could make good on such a promise?

Bringing Sexy Back: La Rééducation Périnéale

In the immediate days following the birth of a lil one, sex is probably one of the last things on a mama's mind. Between nursing schedules, diaper changes and recovery, women may have little desire for intimacy. In fact, nearly 65 percent of lilsugar readers said they waited about eight weeks to jump back in the saddle, so to speak, while almost all of them commented that the first times weren't the most pleasant experiences.

While lots of Americans wait to get the six-week postpartum OK from their doctors, it appears that the French do things differently. In last week's Guardian newspaper, an ex-pat recalled her shock at receiving a prescription for a procedure called la rééducation périnéale après accouchement - perineal retraining after childbirth - after delivering her babe at a French hospital. According to her friends, the procedure has been used since World War I, when French women were encouraged to procreate quickly following the deaths of so many soldiers. The writer goes into great detail about the procedure, which is paid for by the state government and described as:

"An extended course of gymnastics for the pelvic area, which also involves electric devices being used to strengthen the birth canal muscles."
