Elmo to Face Consequences of Economic Downturn

Even the businesses lining Sesame Street aren't immune from the effects of a sinking economy. To help kids better understand the recession, Sesame Street will air a one hour special next week called Families Stand Together: Feeling Secure in Tough Times. The show stars Al Roker and Deborah Roberts, as well as personal finance and parenting experts to discuss strategies for maintaining children's well-being during hardships. When his mother loses her job, Elmo is forced to work through his family's issues. Targeting two to eight-year-olds, the show also features real life families and their tips to surviving the obstacles they have overcome.

Fans of the original The Office series know the British comedic genius of Ricky Gervais. Creator of the hit series, Ricky has taken his act to other shows including Sesame Street. We love to see familiar faces hanging with Elmo and Big Bird, but this clip is outtakes from the popular kid's show. Instead of discussing the alphabet or Mr. Noodle, these two are giving high fours and cracking up with the camera crew. Known to self deprecate for a laugh, Ricky says to the interviewer, "You can't even control a Muppet and a fat guy." Get a good start to the day with a hearty laugh.

Michelle Obama Meets Big Bird on Sesame Street

Someone told the first lady how to get to Sesame Street! After making appearances everywhere from soup kitchens to military hospitals, Michelle Obama addressed a crowd at the US Mission to the United Nations in New York on Tuesday and talked about her biggest accomplishment since taking on her new role. She said:

I'm thrilled to be here, but I was just at Sesame Street - I'm sorry. And I never thought I'd be on Sesame Street with Elmo and Big Bird and I was thrilled. I'm still thrilled. I'm on a high. I think it's probably the best thing I've done so far in the White House. But we were there talking about nutrition and healthy eating, and it's just been a thrill.

It's clear that children are a priority for this mom of two. Mrs. Obama is the latest of a long line of celebrities who have made guest appearances on the beloved educational kiddie show.

It is always an exciting afternoon when the FAO Schwarz holiday catalog arrives. While I may still be planning my Halloween activities, it is never too early to sit down and thumb through the book of extravagant toys for children of all ages. This year's edition was filled with massive stuffed animals and a $10,000 military ATV, but what really caught my eye was the new Muppet Whatnot Workshop that is due to open next week.

You know the extra Muppets you see when watching Sesame Street or old versions of The Muppet Show on YouTube? The ones that are in the background and rarely have any big lines? Those are Whatnots and now you and your lil one can work together to create a custom puppet of your own. To see how the process works, and how much this creation will cost, read more.

After choosing a body, eyes, nose and hair style, you can select the appropriate clothing and submit your design online. Approximately a month later, your personal Whatnot arrives in the mail. The kits ($130) will be sold exclusively through FAO Schwarz and include reusable stickers of each of the design options, as well as a gift card to cover the cost of the design, creation and shipping of your puppet.

While the price may sound a bit steep, the idea of having a Muppet of my own has me actually putting this on my holiday wish list.

Oprah may not be the hottest ticket in town anymore. Sure, the talk queen has scored interviews with some of Hollywood's hottest, but this season Sesame Street has got some big names on the block. From David Beckham to Jessica Alba and Heidi Klum to Jack Black. Even Neil Patrick Harris makes a musical appearance singing a catchy tune about shoes. Is Sesame Street the place to be?

Wee TV: Feist on Sesame Street

The 39th season of Sesame Street is set to debut on August 11, so the Children's Television Workshop has provided us with a sneak peek at one of the celebrity acts to join Elmo and friends on set. Popular Canadian singer Feist will kick off the season with a special rendition of her “1 2 3 4” song.

The new season will feature a host of guest celebrity appearances, including Will Arnett, Jessica Alba, David Beckham, Heidi Klum, Neil Patrick Harris, Sandra Oh, Jenny McCarthy, Jason Taylor, and Jack Black. The show will also introduce parodies of several popular shows, such as 30 Rock, High School Musical, and Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?. With a lineup like this, I may be setting up the Tivo more for myself than my daughter!

Junior JetSet: A Theme Park for the Entire Family

An amusement park for parents and children? Take me to it! Whether your child watches Sesame Street religiously or is a casual viewer, Sesame Place is destination for families looking for adventure this summer.

Located about 30 miles north of Philadelphia, the park features more than 30 attractions, including a dozen water rides, three live shows (including a live production of Elmo’s World), daily parades and visits from the entire Sesame crew. Unlike other parks we have reviewed, Sesame Place is designed for the seven and under crowd, meaning even toddlers are welcome on most rides.

Inspired by the show’s characters, there are kiddie versions of the traditional pirate ship ride, an airplane ride, a brand new carousel, a simulated hot air balloon and the requisite tea cups.

But, he real action is over at the water rides, where you can take a leisurely inner-tube ride down Big Bird’s 1,000 foot Rambling River or swiftly glide though a system of water slides on a large raft with up to six of your nearest and dearest friends on the Sky Splash.

The highlight of the trip for most visitors is the interaction with the Sesame characters. Throughout the day, the monsters wander around posing for pictures, giving out hugs and putting smiles small faces.

The park is clean, smoke-free and of a manageable size. Bathrooms, with multiple changing tables, can be found throughout the park, and rarely have lines. The only downside of the park is their ticket policy, which requires all visitors over the age of 2 (adults and children) to pay the full ticket price of $48 per person.

Texts and Tunes: Sesame Street Old School

Sesame Street has changed! If you haven't tuned into the beloved educational program since you were a child, you may be in for a shock when you turn it on with your tot. Mr. Snuffleupagus is now simply Snuffy and everyone can see him! Cookie Monster eats fruits and vegetables and encourages children to exercise and the opening song is now sung with a hip-hop beat.

The people at the Children's Television Workshop are well aware of the updates because they recently introduced the second volume of the original Sesame Street shows on DVD, "Sesame Street: Vol. 2 - Old School (1974-1979)" ($26.99). While the new set includes five hour-long shows, 57 bonus segments, and the never aired test pilot, a 12-page booklet with behind-the-scenes information and photos and celebrity appearances by Judy Collins, Henry Winkler, Paul Simon, Lily Tomlin, Richard Pryor and Ray Charles, what you might find even more exciting is the lack of Elmo, Zoe and Telli. And, It's nostalgic for those who grew up in the 70s.

In fact, The New York Times Magazine had an interesting piece about how the show has changed over the last two decades, suggesting that this DVD might need to come with a parental warning label to meet today's parenting standards.
