Bill Clinton Knew How to Network at an Early Age

Although networking can reap rewards for your career progression and job hunt, it's not always easy. In fact, it's a skill that requires a lot of dedication and time. Business Insider featured an excerpt from Never Eat Alone, written by Keith Ferrazzi, which talks about how Bill Clinton took networking seriously even when he was still in college:

[While] a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University, he met a graduate student named Jeffrey Stamps at a party. Clinton promptly pulled out a black address book.

"What are you doing here at Oxford, Jeff?" he asked.

"I'm at Pembroke on a Fulbright," Jeff replied. Clinton penned "Pembroke" into his book, then asked about Stamps's undergraduate school and his major.

"Bill, why are you writing this down?" asked Stamps.

"I'm going into politics and plan to run for governor of Arkansas, and I'm keeping track of everyone I meet," said Clinton.

Taking notes shows a lot of commitment to networking. Although you don't have to be as extreme as Bill Clinton and write down a person's details on an index card while you're in front of them, you can do something similar by scribbling notes at the end of the day and saving it as a word document or writing details on the back of the business cards people give you.

I was at a conference this past weekend with my best friend and noticed her furiously scribbling on the business cards we just exchanged with people. "Why are you defacing the cards?!" I asked, horrified. She then explained the method behind her apparent madness, and it was such a brilliantly simple idea that I knew I had to share it with you.

When you receive too many biz cards at a networking event, it's hard to keep track of whom those cards belong to. You can deal with this problem by simply scribbling a quick note about the person. For example, you can write what you were talking about with the person and if you need to get in touch with them. The best ideas are always so easy, yet nifty!

I used to constantly forget to charge my phone overnight and would spend my day furiously switching my cell on and off just to conserve battery. That's until I bought another charger to leave in the office. I know that some of you with superhuman memories don't have this problem, but for my forgetful peers, here is a nice list of things you should keep in the office . . . just in case!

All Types of Chargers: Keep an extra set of chargers, be it phone or computer or some gadget you can't do without, at your office. This is so you won't beat yourself up over forgetting to charge your electronic devices the night before. You can alternatively choose to leave another fully charged battery at the office, but it seems like the chargers are generally way cheaper!
Feminine Products: It's the time of the month, but you keep forgetting to bring some feminine products to work. If the office bathroom doesn't have a dispenser, remember to keep a full pack of it at work so you don't ever have to run out to the nearest pharmacy when you're on the job.
Mini Whiteboard: If you're really forgetful, you might not remember completing things on your electronic to-do list. I know it's really easy to dismiss and click away the alerts when you're on your computer. Increase chances of remembering by placing a small whiteboard on your desk to scribble down urgent items.

5 Ways to Save the Candid Things Your Children Say

Incredible things come out of the mouths of babes, but it's hard to keep track of all the tidbits your tot says - especially if you are mother to many. Some people write the anecdotes down, and others just commit them to memory by repeating them to anyone who will listen, but I've come up with a few easy ways to keep a record of these utterances.

Frame it! Take your favorite picture of your child and frame it. While a black and white photograph works best, anything will do. Use a dry erase marker to scribble the latest saying across the top or bottom of the glass and it becomes an ever changing work of art. If you have more than one kiddo, create a wall of quotes.
Stencil it! Looking for design inspiration? Fill the walls of your child's room by penning, painting, or stenciling them with the family-famous sayings.
Journal it! Fill the pages of a leather-bound journal with all the wonderful things that come out of your child's mouth. Then take the time to read through them every so often.
Facebook it! Share your youngster's musings with family and friends via Facebook so everyone can appreciate your wee one's wit.
Twitter it! Since tweets are 140 characters or less, a private account is an excellent way to technologically chronicle your offspring's thoughts.

Starbucks To-Go Cold Cup Tumbler: Love It or Hate It?

Even before my afternoon stint as a barista, I was an enthusiastic fan of Starbucks. I go there on an almost daily basis, and often bring in my reusable Starbucks "to go" tumbler. When I first bought it, I had the manager at my local store use a Sharpie to scribble shorthand for my regular order on the side (genius!).

This Summer, Starbucks developed an even edgier tumbler for the warm weather: a cold to-go cup, complete with green straw, constructed in clear lucite. It sold out almost immediately, and is now being sold on eBay for as much as $50 a pop. What do you think of it: impractical or brilliant?
