The key to keeping backseat harmony is being prepared. Aside from parents mapping out their course and packing snacks for the kiddos, stocking up on the drive-time activities is essential for a smooth ride. After downloading our road trip games, think up other items that will keep children occupied.

A Brownie troop peddling Girl Scout cookies outside of Sugar HQ in the middle of a weekday sparked this question: when is it appropriate to pull your child out of school? For some parents it is only on rare occasions like to accommodate a family reunion or a doctor's appointment, while other moms and dads allow their children to accrue numerous absences so the family doesn't have to travel during the peak season or to beat weekend traffic on road trips. Growing up, one student in my private school could stay home whenever she wanted if she reimbursed her parents for the missed day's tuition.

Patricia Heaton is hysterical as Frankie Heck, a midwest mom of three who tries to make ends meet by selling used cars in ABC's sitcom The Middle. Though the show is relatively new, it already has its share of memorable moments and situations to which any harried mother can relate. Check out a few of my favorites:
- Despite being near-broke and constantly pulled in different directions, Frankie is still head over heels in love her husband Mike.
