The Pull Present

Okay, so the father doesn't actually pull the baby out per se, but he's often there to mentally coax mama along as she pushes the baby into the world. It has become common practice in recent years for men to bestow a gift upon their wives for birthing their child. Whether it's a card, balloons, roses, or a diamond tennis bracelet, it's nice to be recognized for nine months of hard work. When I had my first child, I gave my husband a lil something to thank him for all of his coaching, attention to detail and concern during my childbearing months. Everyone has a different experience in the delivery room, but most say labor and delivery nurses are indispensable. Nurses assist from the moment the mama-to-be checks into the hospital until the new babe is bathed, swaddled and eating on his own. They often spend hours coaching the laboring woman to the point of pushing. When mom reaches that state, the doctor takes over for the last 90 minutes and catches the child. While both jobs are vitally important, the nurses are sometimes overlooked as praise is given to the OB/GYN. Other times, families buy the nurses a present to show their gratitude. Did you?

What to Consider When Creating a Birthing Plan

A birthing plan outlines your wishes and preferences for delivery day. If you're a first time parent - be prepared for some surprises, but having a guide allows you to process your choices before your water breaks, and the adrenaline starts pumping. It also ensures ample time to discuss options with your partner and doctor so everyone hears your wishes loud and clear before your delivery room arrival.

A.D.A.M suggests putting thought into the following:

How do you feel about using medication for pain relief in labor? Do you want to try to go without pain medicine, or would you prefer to have anesthesia as early as possible?
Would you like to be able to labor in a tub or shower, if one is available at your chosen birthing center or hospital?
Is there anything you want to bring to the hospital? Check the hospital's guidelines about videocameras, music, pillows, lights, etc.
Who do you want to be present during labor? During delivery? Is there anyone you specifically want kept out of the room?
What is the role of your coach?

How do you feel about the use of stirrups to brace your legs? If you do not want to use stirrups, who will be with you to help hold your legs when you push?

Do you have specific desires about a bonding period with the baby after birth?
Do you have strong feelings about receiving a routine IV to replenish your fluids?
Are you planning to breastfeed? If so, how do you feel about having your baby stay in your room after delivery? Would you like to avoid pacifiers or supplements, unless ordered by your baby’s pediatrician?
Do you want anyone from the hospital to help you with breastfeeding, or to explain bottlefeeding or other babycare issues?
Do you want a male baby to be circumcised?

Most lil ones are anxiously awaiting Santa's arrival later this week. For those children who still believe that behaving themselves is key to a pile of presents under the tree from Old Saint Nick, they may be feeling a bit of regret for pushing their younger brother yesterday. Would You Have an Eighth Child for $25?

I came across a New York Times article that was so outrageous I had to read it three times before I believed the print. In Turkmenistan, women are reportedly being offered a $25 one–time bonus to have eight or more children.

You ready that correctly – I said $25. I'm not sure any amount would be enough to convince me to have EIGHT children but if someone were to "reward" me, there would have to be a lot more 0's on the end of that number. Maybe the added benefits of free utilities, public transportation and life–long dental care will be enough to push you over the edge, but I still couldn't be convinced.

And to show what a generous president he is, Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov announced that in honor of Turkmenistan's Women's Day, which is this Saturday, every female citizen will receive $10 as a present.
