It is always an exciting afternoon when the FAO Schwarz holiday catalog arrives. While I may still be planning my Halloween activities, it is never too early to sit down and thumb through the book of extravagant toys for children of all ages. This year's edition was filled with massive stuffed animals and a $10,000 military ATV, but what really caught my eye was the new Muppet Whatnot Workshop that is due to open next week.

Stuffed animals sit on shelves, but puppets make magic happen. No matter how old you are it's hard to resist a singing, dancing or talking plush toy. And, the handheld performers can be entertaining and educational for kids— stimulating their imaginations and encouraging creative play.

While what happens to disappearing socks in the wash remains a mystery, here's a quick tip on what you can do with the spares. Take a sharpie marker and draw faces on them and pop them in your purse.
The next time your child fusses in a long line or waiting room, pull them out.

Sock monsters are one of my favorite on-the-fly entertainment tricks and a cost-free way to creatively reinvent solo socks. If the simple Sharpie-drawn monster is beneath your crafty standards, try Monster Munch's free downloadable pattern and instructions. It's a quick eight-step process that involves two socks, two buttons, a bit of felt, and some stuffing.

Who is America's favorite sweet, red, furry Sesame Street character? Elmo, of course! Animal might resent that statement, but the drumming critter is hardly what might be described as sweet.

An island getaway that offers parents and wee ones an opportunity to soak up the sun and enjoy a few days of leisure? Sign me up!
Located just 30 miles off the coast of Cape Cod, getting to Nantucket, which means the faraway island in the language of the Wampanoag tribe, is half the fun.

Depending on how religious your family is, Passover Seders can either run from 30 minutes to well over two hours, not including the festive meal. While you might have been happy to spread your four glasses of wine over a two hour reading of the Haggadah prior to your tots, now you need to find a way to occupy your lil one throughout the service.
In addition to bringing your dining out standbys — like books and wiki sticks, consider some holiday-related activities next week.

Since she first came on the scene as a teenage waitress in 1988's Mystic Pizza, Julia Roberts has charmed her way into the hearts of theater-goers. Now appearing in her first starring role in five years, the Duplicity star has chosen motherhood over Hollywood glamour. Splitting her time between homes in Taos, NM and New York City, the actress spends more time watching her three tots — twins Hazel Patricia and Phinnaeus Walter, 4, and Henry Daniel,1, — than acting.
