Prior to the inauguration of President Barack Obama, Damon Weaver, then 10, launched his own campaign asking for an interview with the soon to be commander-in-chief. But the young man wasn't looking for a handout; he has a resume that rivals most professional reporters.

Today is Presidents' Day and a prime opportunity to talk to your kids about our nation's history and why some schools, banks, and stores are closed to honor our forefathers. Most youngsters don't need detailed political rants or your take on what George Washington would have said about the credit crisis; here are some politically correct ideas for broaching the subject of former White House residents with your children.
- Read a Political Book: The What Presidents Are Made of book ($13) is a good starter for young children interested in history.

If you've got a wee one that is enthused about our newest president, Barack Obama, then let him wear his or her pride in the form of a soft genOtee onesie or tee that proudly exclaims, "I am Generation O." The darling duds are the brainchild of a mama who is cashing in on the Obama craze after she made one for her baby in a moment of inspiration on election night. Fellow parents kept asking her where to buy them so she made selling them her business.

If last night's inaugural concert for kids got your lil one excited about today's historic events, be sure to keep your boob tube tuned to Nickelodeon throughout the day today. The network best known for its slime machine continues its 'Kids Pick the President' campaign by sending three young reporters, including Phil Collins' daughter Lily, to our nation's capital to report on the transfer of power from their perspective. The coverage will include retrospectives of past inaugurations, interviews with tots attending the event and highlights of President Obama's inaugural address.

Though tomorrow's inaugural balls may call for black ties and heels, your lil one doesn't need to get all decked out to celebrate like the Obamas. Get the party started at home with some festive food, and then tune into the Kids' Inaugural: We Are the Future Concert this evening. The concert, which will be attended by Michelle Obama, Jill Biden, and their families, will honor military families with live performances by Miley Cyrus, the Jonas Brothers, Demi Levato, and Bow Wow.

The inaugural festivities are not only focused on the swearing in ceremony and balls that will take place tomorrow, the Obama-Biden transition team has designated today as the nation's first National Day of Service. The President-elect and Vice-President-elect will be participating in several DC-area projects and are encouraging Americans to go into their communities and volunteer in a variety of ways - from donating blood at a local hospital, to cleaning neighborhood parks or working at a soup kitchen. There's no time like the present to introduce your tots the importance of giving back to your community.

Let freedom ring! With the inauguration a week away, the lil ones in your life may be feeling a bit patriotic as they hear more about our nation's capital and its leaders. Though a trip to Washington to join the five million or so who are making the journey might not be in the cards for your kid, you can encourage their interest with books, puzzles, games and toys related to the executive branch of government.
