There's buzz about the new book, If You Give a Mom a Martini ($12). Written by two mothers looking for ways to sneak in 10-minute intervals of me time while raising their kids, the text offers readers 100 ways to spend their time from having a quickie with the hubby to taking the long way home and rocking out to music in the car. While it's a clever concept, I'm curious if any mama is so far submerged in her children's lives that she needs obvious suggestions for how to fill free gaps.

We've discussed the things mamas take for granted in their pre-baby days, but one that stood out was indulging in a few drinks and sleeping it off the next day. Watching the trailer for the upcoming film The Hangover may make parents a bit nostalgic for those cocktailing days, but as any mum who has suffered through a morning after knows, hangovers and motherhood don't mix.

Good conversation with girlfriends is something lots of women take for granted. Before kids, gabbing and hanging out with the gals happened on a whim. When one friend becomes a mama and the others aren't quite there, the chitchat doesn't have to end.

It's hard to know what to say or do when a friend loses a child or finds out her offspring is ailing. So rather than trying to read another woman's mind, hand her a journal so she can empty her thoughts onto its pages. Mothers tend to take care of others before themselves and in trying times, it's nice to give them a medium to express their fears, frustrations, hopes and wishes in private.

There's always an excuse to get out of exercising — especially when there's a new baby in tow. The Dutch, who take their bicycle riding rather seriously (check out their balance bikes) and are known for their innovative stroller design (think about the Bugaboo), are at it again with the Taga — a combination high-end stroller and bicycle. Though the Taga has yet to make its American debut, we wonder if it will be a hit when it gets here.

Stuck in line at the bank, waiting for a table at a crowded restaurant or sitting in traffic with your tots? Parents often find themselves fumbling for something to occupy their youngsters. But all they have to do is grab their iPhone.

Making time for yourself is never easy, but it should always be a priority. I wish I could be with my children every waking moment (and watch them while they sleep), but it's important for their development, my growth as a mother and my relationship with my husband that I get alone time to decompress every once in a while.
Here are some of my favorite ways to relax, celebrate my mommy-hood, adulthood and, well, me.

With the hustle and bustle of the holiday season about to become history, I'm already looking forward to 2009. Several moms I know said that the hectic holiday season has pushed them over the edge. Despite the economy, they are planning child-free getaways in the next month even if it's just one night at a local hotel.
