Babysugar Diaries: Paige Maternity Jeans

Many mamas-to-be find denim too restricting, but jeans suit most occasions so pregnant women get a lot of bang for their buck when they invest in a pair. Paige sent me a pair of Laurel Canyon maternity jeans ($185) to review and since I am a fan of their regular jeans, I was excited to give them a go.

After washing and hemming them to my liking, I slipped on the swanky dungarees. A perfect fit on the tush and legs, I was thrilled to look hip in (gasp!) maternity jeans! Constructed with 98 percent cotton and the remaining percent spandex, the black stretchy belly band starts where a normal button and belt loops would be and rises to just below the belly button leaving no room to bare your burgeoning belly or bottom.

While some maternity jeans pull all the way up to the bra line and look unsightly on the hanger, they do keep the belly from looking pinched in half. When wearing tight shirts with my Paige jeans, I can see the line where the band stops. For slim mamas–to–be that's not a problem, but for mothers who are more cushioned, the split may be a tad too much. The seam didn't bother me too much though because I went out and purchased another pair in white and between the two, I hardly wear anything else.

Since maternity garb is only intended for a few months wear, many moms-to-be have a hard time justifying the high price of designer jeans. I say, indulge! Having experienced pregnancy, I can assure you that you will LIVE in your most flattering and comfortable jeans so on a price by wearing basis, you will definitely get your money's worth.

Instead of the usual stretch tummy panel, these hip dungarees cut just below the belly and sport the elastic panels on the sides. And not to worry, they come up higher in the back so your tush won't be exposed when you lean over to pick up that tres chic diaper bag.

"Oh, you'll be wearing your maternity clothes for a while after you have that baby." Expectant moms don't exactly want to hear that when they've been forced to wear the same old tired threads for the past four months. Plus, most every pregnant lady dreams her body will bounce back to pre-baby shape before she even leaves the hospital. However, many moms do find solace in their partner's over-sized shirts, baggy jeans and spacious boxers.

The elastic waistband on those maternity pants is enough to make a new mom cry, especially one on a hormone roller coaster. While she may not want to attend the company Christmas party in her hubby's retired work shirts, they sure do make cozy nap time attire and the worn in jeans will make a swollen mommy weep tears of joy. Come bed time, the old man's hole ridden college tees and raggedy boxers are just what the exhausted mum needs to get a good night's (and by that I mean two to three hour stretches) sleep. Tell Mommy: What Were Your Maternity Wardrobe Staples?

What happens when your belly pops and you can't squeeze into your favorite pair of jeans? You find a few new wardrobe staples to favor. While pregnant, my must haves were a short black skirt for work, jeans that dressed up with heels or down with flats and a lil black dress that made many appearances paired with different accessories. I picked up that Liz Lange frock for a steal at Target and was excited when I recently had the opportunity to chat with the pregnancy mogul about her latest line and what she considers expectant wardrobe staples.

Since I worked while pregnant, my maternity wardrobe staples were: two pairs of work pants, a few sweaters and dresses, and tank tops and then for weekends, a sweatshirt, sweatpants, and jeans. There is so much of your regular wardrobe that you can wear while pregnant: button-up sweaters can be worn open, sweatpants can be warn below the belly, oversize t-shirts are great, etc. I think having maternity tanks is important because the regular ones will get too short! You can wear tanks under any regular clothes to make them maternity.
