What Is the Appropriate Age For the First Kiss Conversation?

While many moms and dads fret about having the birds and the bees conversation with their children, some never broach the topic of the first kiss. Kids' lips can meet in puppy love on the playground or years down the road for late bloomers. In last night's episode of Mad Men, Sally Draper planted a wet one on her friend, Ernie, while the two innocently pretended they were driving in a car as they sat in an empty bathtub. After hearing about the incident, Betty told her daughter, "You don’t kiss boys, boys kiss you. Your first kiss will be very special.” Since smooching happens early - even in preschool these days, when do you think it's the best time for parents to talk about a lip-lock to their tots?

Do You Know About Your Mother's Hospital Experience?

Oh mad mama! It was not easy to watch Betty Draper give birth on this week's episode of Mad Men and consider the bizarre and bygone birthing methods of the '60s. Betty and Don arrived at the hospital together, but he was quickly whisked to a daddy-to-be waiting room and she was wheeled away and told to prepare to be shaven and given an enema. While glowing and beautiful as ever, Betty was still grieving the loss of her father and an utter wreck, so the moment she was given procedural (but mysterious) drugs to calm her nerves she wigged out. BuzzSugar has a look at the maddest moments from the episode, but I am glued to the terrifying, lonely, emotional and hazy delivery room experience.

Modern moms are given choices. You can have a water birth or do it in a hospital bed. You can go drug-free or take carefully administered drugs to ease the pain. You can schedule your down-there maintenance at a beauty bar or go natural. You can hold your husband's hand or cast him to the waiting room. It's frightening to be reminded that such pregnancy and delivery choices weren't always available to women (and still aren't in many places in the world). Do you know if your mother or women in your family got the Betty Draper treatment in the hospital, or were they able to control their birthing experience?

The recent A Night to Remember episode of Mad Men featured a serious post dinner party meltdown from the perfect on the outside, tormented on the inside, housewife Betty.

Betty's fit was a long time coming (what with Don cheating on her and treating her like a child), but the mom in me empathized with her reaction the next morning.

She sat at the breakfast table with her two little ones, smoking a cigarette (it couldn't have been 8 a.m. yet!) in the dress she wore the night before. Though she didn't say a thing and her husband didn't acknowledge her while the kids happily said goodbye to daddy, the scene presented tension that was surely being absorbed - even if subconsciously - by the tots. Do you and your partner try and hide your disagreements from your children and if so, how do you manage the tension when the kids are around?

Does Your Child Play an Instrument?

I've been catching up on AMC's Mad Men and was touched by a scene from season one when Betty's young neighbor Glen sat down at the piano and plunked out a pretty tune. Sadly, his mother, Helen Bishop, yelled at him a second later to stop or risk waking up his sister. The moment broke my heart because it appeared the tender character was trying to express himself and I was reminded what an important role music can play in a child's development.

We've come a long way baby. From morning sickness, to swollen legs, to the constant worry about her impending arrival, a mom-to-be has a lot to complain about. Hard as pregnancy may be today, it doesn't compare to having a bun in the oven several decades ago. As we saw on this week's Mad Men, times have changed, and luckily for us modern day mommas, so has pregnancy. Do You Ever Forget Your Children's Names?

The other night while accepting his Emmy, Mad Men's Matthew Weiner mentioned his three children, the first two by name and then referred to the third as "the other one" before quickly adding in a proper moniker. Whether the statement was artfully crafted or a memory slip, it's something to which most moms and dads can relate. Do you ever forget your child's name or call them the wrong one?
