The Taboo of Feeding Kids Junk Food

In the '70s and '80s, Spaghetti-Os, Twinkies, cheese in a can, and sugared cereals were tossed into many shopping carts due to convenience. But now, many of the mamas who grew up sipping soda are leading the no-juice campaign.

Women who might have licked cheddar powder off their Cheetos-stained fingers in their youth now choose more nutritious foods for their offspring. When the playground picnic table is piled high with a potluck of sandwiches on whole grain bread, fresh fruit, yogurt, and homemade baked goods, is there a stigma attached to the parent who ponies up a box of Krispy Kremes? A collective eye roll is what one doughnut-bearing mother I know received. I've since heard of moms sneaking their children sips of Sprite in restaurants and nibbles of candy bars behind closed doors to avoid being ostracized.

For the Hollywood celebmamas who don't hide their lil one's junk food indulgences from the paparazzi – think the Jolie-Pitt clan carrying chip bags in New Orleans and the rumor about the Spears-Federline boys drinking Coca-Cola in their bottles – headlines about poor eating accompanied the photos. Does a picture of a child eating from a shiny snack bag really mean that they've never downed a well-balanced meal, or has the movement toward healthy eating gotten a bit ridiculous? What's your opinion?

Do You Feed Your Kids Junk Food?

Growing up, I was a pretty healthy eater. But like most kids, I also delighted in junk food in doses - donuts every Sunday morning and an occasional trip to McD's .

Today, kids are bombarded by sugary and preservative filled advertisements that make the snacks nearly impossible to avoid. Even global mama Angelina Jolie is guilty of feeding her tots bags of potato chips.

Aside from kids loving the tasty treats, they offer many busy moms a convenient short cut, which is why many parents fall back on them.

Are you guilty of the quick fix, too?

Ecomomics: Have Tough Times Brought Out Junk Food?

In these tough economic times, many families are struggling with putting healthy food on the table. A nutrient-rich, vegetable-filled salad with meat often costs significantly more than a fatty meal from the McDonald's dollar menu.

Parents trying to curb their food budget find that cheaper food prices translate to higher saturated fats and food coloring. In a price war, Kraft macaroni and cheese will almost always beat out the organic wheat pasta and marinara sauce. While many tots may rejoice in the presence of junk food, mommies might cringe with every lil bite they take.

Wonder Woman: Amy Poehler

She's had us rolling on the floor with her dead-on impression of Hillary Clinton during the presidential election and cracked us up as the junk food-eating, karaoke-singing surrogate mother to Tina Fey's baby in last year's Baby Mama. Now, Amy Poehler is back on our boob tubes as a public servant in Parks and Recreation.

The new mama - Poehler and her funny man husband Will Arnett welcomed son Archibald "Archie" William Emerson last Fall - went back to her Saturday Night Live Weekend Update chair just a weeks after giving birth to help have fits of hysterics through the final pre-election weekend. Shortly after, she announced her departure from the show in order to play an idealistic bureaucrat who is opening our eyes to the world of local public service.

When we spoke with Poehler during the Baby Mama press tour, she joked that, "I’m just gonna name my kids numbers. New Dude, Little Dude, and eight George Foremans." It looks like she took a different route, but we are loving her just the same.

The Last Time I Really Enjoyed a Candy Bar I Was Seven

Ignorance is bliss when it comes to some childhood habits like eating junk food. A chocolate bar tastes ten times better when you don't know how many calories it has or care. Kids pick their favorite flavor of ice cream based on the color or amount of bubble gum chunks it contains. As adults we worry about food dye, processing, trans-fats, sugar, sodium and whatever other substance is headlined in the articles we devour and then decide to limit from our lil ones.

A recent New York Times article explored food worries and potential eating issues in today's children. While an 8-year-old stresses about sodium increasing his heart rate - his mother was proud of his nutritional awareness. The report said:

While scarcely any expert would criticize parents for paying attention to children’s diets, many doctors, dietitians and eating disorder specialists worry that some parents are becoming overzealous, even obsessive, in efforts to engender good eating habits in children. With the best of intentions, these parents may be creating an unhealthy aura around food.

I primarily feed my tots an organic and non-processed diet, but every blue moon - I let them have cake for breakfast. How do you balance this with your kids?

Interview With Liz Lange: Mommy Time

Liz Lange's a reader, a baker and a maternity-line maker! If you ever wondered how the busy businesswoman stole time with her kids or how she occupies her precious mom-me time, you're in luck! While chatting with the renowned designer about her latest line, she also dished on a few of her favorite things.

lilsugar: What is your favorite thing to do in your own time?

Liz Lange: Love to read – I’m always reading a book. From the classics to the lowest junk. I just died over American Wife by Curtis Sittenfeld. I can’t get that book out of my head. I’m almost in mourning over that book, so I can’t even start another book yet. I love to watch TV. I find that to be so relaxing at the end of the day at night after the kids have gone to bed. I watch everything, nothing is low enough for me – Ugly Betty, The Bachelor, Top Chef, American Idol. Some of the stuff we watch as a family – like American Idol, I watch with my children. Love, love, love all that stuff. One little luxury I try to do at home as often as I can is try to lock my door and try to take a bath. I feel like that really calms me. My kids won’t always let me do it, but when I can, I do it.

lilsugar: What is your favorite activity to do with your kids?

Liz Lange: On the weekends I like to cook and bake with the kids. I like food a lot and I love taking them to fun new restaurants that are appropriate.

lilsugar: What is your favorite parenting trick?

Liz Lange: One thing that I used to notice is that whenever my kids would see something either on TV or in a store that they wanted – they would start saying "Oh I want it, I want it, I want it." Instead of sort of saying "No" all the time, or negotiating with them, or sometimes, unfortunately, giving in, I just said, and I don’t know why but it ended up working so beautifully that I use it all the time now, I just said, "Oh, I’ll add it to the list." And I sort of have this list going now of things that they want, and they are totally comfortable with that, as long as it is on the list. There’s a feeling that eventually, whether it’s a birthday or it’ll be Hanukkah, or it will be something and it will be a reason for me to look at that list and get them some of the things that they wanted. I feel like that has avoided so many little meltdowns.

lilsugar: You know you're a mother when ____.

Liz Lange: You’re saying things that you never thought you would say – "Because I said so." "Because I’m the mother." You can’t even believe these words are coming out of your mouth.

lilsugar: Why didn’t anyone tell me ____?

Liz Lange: That the day you give birth, it feels like someone turns over one of those sand hourglasses and you feel like the time just starts to whip by. Like why was my childhood so long and theirs are so short. I feel like I was a kid forever and I feel like the years are whipping by.

lilsugar: Best trick your parents taught you?

Liz Lange: Sometimes I really admire, now looking back on it, how strict they were. My parents were strict and I feel like if I could be a little more strict with my children things would be a little easier, but that’s just not me.

lilsugar: Helicopter or free-range mom?

Liz Lange: Free range. At least I try to be!
