What's the One Newborn Item You Can't Live Without?

When women are expecting their first child, they have a checklist of everything they need for baby's arrival. Receiving blankets? Check. Bottles? Check. Car seat? Check. But when the second baby enters the picture, mommy ditches the list and just tries to make it to the hospital on time. Having just experienced this, I was physically ready and more mentally prepared for the second child's debut. Blankets shmankets - just deliver the baby and get me home!

Obviously I needed the diapers, a car seat and bottles, but if I could only pick one superfluous item, it would be the Fisher Price Nature's Touch Baby Papasan Cradle Swing ($140). From day one that device has served my son and me well. Initially, he slept in it and gazed at the moving birds. As the months passed, he began chilling in it while I showered, cooked, cleaned up or played with his sister. When he was fussy and didn't want to nap in his crib, he snoozed away in the swing. While I would be challenged to choose between the swing and his Fisher Price Nature's Touch Baby Papasan Seat, I'm pretty sure the swing could serve both purposes.

Blast From the Past: Miss Weather Dress Up Set

When Fisher Price introduced their retro Little People Sets earlier this year, we were inspired. So today we are launching Blast From the Past, a new feature on lil to showcase nostalgic goodies - games, clothing and characters - from our own childhoods that have made a comeback for our kids!

Though there are a number of modern Colorforms kits available on store shelves, this Miss Weather Dress Up Set ($12) brings back memories of the Holly Hobby version of our childhoods. Colorforms were first introduced in 1951 when two art students were looking for a cheap alternative to paint and discovered that a flexible vinyl material stuck to their walls. The kits went on to become wildly popular for their ease of use, ability to be reused and the dexterity they promoted in children. The Miss Weather set combines the popularity of the 80's cult classic Little Miss books with classic Colorforms construction. It can be used as a teaching aid for learning about weather and clothing and makes a great quiet activity for restaurants and car rides.

Toy Box: Fisher Price Little People Celebrate 50th Birthday

Fisher Price Little People have certainly evolved over the years. When we were tots, the people were simple pegs with a round head attached to them. No arms, no legs and definite choking hazards by today's standards.

Later this week, Little People will celebrate their 50th anniversary (just like a certain doll that we know) and Fisher Price is celebrating by releasing four limited-edition anniversary playsets. The Little People 50th Birthday Play 'n' Go School, Play 'n' Go Farm, Play 'n' Go Home and Play 'n' Go Fire Station ($18 each) look just like their original models from the peg-shaped people to the handles located on top of each set, but meet current safety laws. Toys R Us locations throughout the country will also be hosting birthday parties for the Little People on Saturday, March 21, so be sure to check with your local store about their planned festivities.

The Gifted Child: 4-Year-Olds

Preschoolers are quite an ambitious group. They spend their days at school being the line leader or napkin passer, and then come home to demonstrate their ability to complete tasks with less oversight. The Gifted Baby: Six Month Old

While much has been said about the importance of the family meal no one ever said that meal had to be at home. My husband and I love to take our lil ones out to dinner to try new foods, but doing so does take some planning.

When building with sugar packets and playing with the paper from our straws grows old, I dive into my bag to pull out some tricks to keep everyone entertained. In addition to crayons and travel-sized games, my latest restaurant necessity is a lift-the-flap book that will keep my son busy while his meal is being prepared. These Fisher Price Little People books ($9) fit perfectly into my diaper bag and provide a good 20 minutes of activity until our server returns with our food. In addition to providing my lil guy with some hands on fun, I've found the books to be a great way to enhance his vocabulary. With eight books in the collection, I foresee many more enjoyable dinners out in our future.
