Jenny McCarthy Talks Autism, Instincts, and Jim Carrey

Jenny McCarthy is one candid cover girl. We'd expect nothing less from the passionate mother and autism advocate who posed with her son Evan, 7, for the September cover of Cookie. Check out a few of the highlights from the interview.

On how she felt when Evan had a seven-hour seizure and went into cardiac arrest in 2004: I ran out of my house and into my driveway and screamed at the top of my lungs to God to just take him away, because I loved him so much and he was in so much pain.

On Amanda Peet calling parents who don't vaccinate their children "parasites": I think vaccines are one of the greatest things ever invented. I used to be [Peet] before I had a kid with autism.

On the position of Generation Rescue: "Vaccinations are safe - dot, dot, dot - for some kids. Vaccinations are not safe - dot, dot, dot - for other kids. Let’s protect the ones who are weak. We are pro–safe vaccine. Vaccines are just not one size fits all. If you gave everyone in the world penicillin, there would be some adverse effects for some people, and possibly deaths."

On parental instincts: "We’re the generation of parents who are saying, ‘Listen to us. We are the bosses of our children.’ I want parents to realize that, and not get pushed around by doctors who say, ‘Oh, that’s 100 percent safe.’"

On her most humbling mom moment: "Watching Evan pee on a fake tree in a waiting room."

On her relationship with Jim Carrey: "It’s wacky-weird that not only does [Carrey] not want to get married, which I love, but he also doesn’t want to have more kids, which I love."

While Autism Awareness Day, teaches the public about the developmental disorder, Jenny McCarthy has been vocalizing her thoughts publicly and on paper since her son, Evan, 6, was diagnosed at the age of two. in her latest release, Healing and Preventing Autism: A Complete Guide, the advocate talks about the causes of the developmental disorder and how she has helped her child heal. She coauthored the text with Evan's pediatrician, Dr. Jerry Kartzinel, who also has a son with autism.

Jenny M Talks About Her Latest Project

Jenny McCarthy and her main man Evan spent some time getting pizza with his dad John Asher in LA over the weekend. Jenny's opened up to the world recently about her son, her relationship with Jim and how much she wants to educate the world as much as she can about autism. Now, she's talking to her hometown Chicago Tribune on writing the book about Evan's autism and what's next on her agenda. Here's more:

Q: You've said "This is the book I was born to write." How did you write it? Were you journaling at the time?
A: With all of my books, I just sit down and write. It's very much after the fact. I have a photographic memory of events in my life; it's one of the things I'm blessed with for the sole purpose of writing books. The story is imprinted on my soul. It wasn't hard to write.
Q: What's next on your schedule?
A: I want to start the mommy autism learning tour across the country. I want to find locations, charge next to nothing and come talk to moms to teach them everything I learned. I'll bring doctors with me.
Q: Is "cute guy" in the book (boyfriend) Jim Carrey?
A: Yes.

The book sounds like heavy stuff, but knowing Jenny she always finds a way to make people smile. Hopefully, all this work she's been doing is helpful to lots of moms out there who are going through similar experiences. Sometimes it's hard to imagine that this is the same woman who made her name on Singled Out.

Green Our Vaccines Rally in Washington, DC

Since the diagnosis of her son, Evan Asher, Jenny McCarthy has singled out autism as her cause. Today, the advocate and her boyfriend, actor Jim Carrey will lead the Green Our Vaccines march and rally in Washington, DC Like many other parents, the celeb mama has been very vocal and firm in her belief that there is a link between autism and vaccinations and continues to campaign for more research. The host-turned-playmate-turned-activist penned, Louder Than Words: A Mother's Journey in Healing Autism, a book about her experience helping her six-year-old to overcome his symptoms.

According to an ABC report:

The Institute of Medicine concluded that 19 major studies, tracking thousands of kids, all show no link between vaccines and autism. Still, thimerosal was removed from essentially all childhood vaccines in 2001 in response to autism fears. But autism rates have continued to rise, leaving many experts to consider the case against thimerosal settled.

I am thankful to parents like Jenny who are drawing attention to this issue, and demanding more research be done. According to the organization, Talk About Curing Autism, one in every 150 children in the United States has autism - a statistic that is too alarming for me, a mother of two young children of vaccination age to ignore.
