Google's Ice Cream Sundae Doodle: Love It or Leave It?

Yesterday's Google Doodle, created in honor of the 119th birthday of the ice cream sundae, caused a bit of a stir on the Internet.

Many thought that the birthday of the sundae didn't seem high profile enough to warrant a Doodle. Others speculated that the design was more of a nod toward the next version of the Android OS, codenamed ice cream. Love it or hate it, it joins a long list of past Doodles - what do you think?

The Google homepage doodles are known for their whimsical celebration of holidays, but past creations can't hold a candle to the jack-o'-lantern heavyweights featured in today's Halloween Google Doodle.

Six giant pumpkins, the biggest weighing in at 1,298 pounds, were brought to the Google campus ready for a team of doodlers to start their G-O-O-G-L-E carvings. With the seeds emptied out of each pumpkin, people were easily able to fit their heads within the cavernous walls. In fact, some of the pumpkins' exteriors measured six inches deep, requiring a saw to carve through the thickest parts. See how these great pumpkins were carved in the full behind-the-scenes video:

Google's a Teenager! 13 of the Year's Best Google Doodles

Thirteen years ago today Google was born in a legendary Palo Alto garage. In honor of its first year as a teenager, we've compiled our favorite Google doodles of 2011.

A way of celebrating the birthdays of pop culture legends and national milestones, the Google Doodle is a nod to the playful side of the company with a day-long redesign of its corporate logo on the site's homepage. The Google Doodle concept started while the search giant was still in its infancy when founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin added a stick figure to the logo as a way of saying they were out of the office attending Burning Man in the Nevada desert. Over 1,000 doodles have appeared on Google homepages in the US and abroad in the years since.

A team of Google designers work on the doodles, but they are open to receiving suggestions and doodles themselves from the public.

Doodling During Meetings Helps You Retain More Information

Scientific research has shown that humans can pay attention to one thing for up to 20 minutes. After that period, it gets harder and harder to focus on it. If you feel your attention span has reached its limit, perhaps you should take a notepad out to doodle.

A study in the Applied Cognitive Psychology Journal tested the doodling theory on a group of participants. Half were instructed to listen to a phone call that recited a list of names of people and places, and the other half were told to doodle when listening to the message. Those who doodled were able to remember 29 percent more than those who didn't. Psychology Today says:

In the study, the phone message was intentionally designed to be boring. One possibility is that doodling distracted participants from their boredom. Yet it demanded less concentration than drifting off into a daydream, so the doodlers may actually have been more focused than non-doodlers.

It doesn't take much for us to go dizzy over Izzy, but somehow, Isabel Marant's Spring collection has left us more enamored than ever before. Marant has the Parisian-cool look down pat, as seen in the array of sexy hand-knit dresses, doodle-print jeans, and minidresses she sent down the runway. It was the perfect balance of rock-star-meets-bohemian, as even more evidenced in pastel patchwork pieces paired with cozy knits, and fringed sweaters with snakeskin-print pants. Meanwhile, partywear options were provided via body-hugging minidresses made in tie-dye and metallic prints. Marant also showed off her sporty side with football tees and surprisingly chic track pants. Leave it to Marant to make sweatpants and tees look so good. ABC comedy Happy Endings comes back for its second season tonight, and it's one of the returning shows I've been looking forward to most. It was introduced as a midseason comedy back in April about a group of six friends in a city (Chicago). The quirky humor hooked me, and I'm hoping more people will give this hilarious show a shot in its second season. If you're thinking about getting into it, here are a few important details to get you up to speed, along with a sneak peek at the new season.

Alex and Dave are exes, and they're cool with each other. Well, sort of; they broke up in the series premiere, in a rather messy fashion: Alex (Elisha Cuthbert) left Dave (Zachary Knighton) at the altar. Now, months later, they've pretty much made their peace with each other and are getting their groove back as single people - but there's still a little spark there.
Max is gay, but he's no stereotype. Straight actor Adam Pally plays Max without relying on gay stereotypes that used to be the norm on TV and in movies. He basically plays Max as a commitment-phobic, regular single guy - just one who dates other dudes.
Penny is the hopeless single girl, and it's mostly her fault. It's not that Penny, played by Casey Wilson, is single because she's unlucky in love or only meets freak shows; Penny's kind of a freak show herself, and it's great. Whether she's doodling her date's name obsessively or completely changing her persona to fit in with the guy she's interested in, Penny goes way over the top - but she never gives up hope that this could be the week she meets her dream man.
Jane and Brad are married and determined to stay that way. Alex's sister Jane (Eliza Coupe) is married to Brad (Damon Wayans Jr.), and they're the only committed couple on the show. Even though all their friends are playing the field, their bond is rock solid, because as they say, Jane and Brad have way too much sex to break up.
