There is something about a baby's bum that is beyond adorable. I could watch my tot's dimpled cheeks run around the house all day if it weren't for fear she would relieve herself on the carpet without warning. I usually put a diaper on her and for extra security, a pair of fancy pants.

While I have a handful of covers that come with skirts and dresses, none compare to the classic embroidered bloomers like those from Blueberry Babies. With her name or initials stitched on her tush, I hardly want to dress her in anything else. The precious baby intimates are always a hit and make fabulous newborn gifts.

A Sugary Sweet Baby Shower For the Sugar Family

Here at Sugar HQ, we have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of Baby Sugar #2. Lisa, the queen of all things Sugar, has developed a perfectly round bump and big sister Katie is ready for her lil sister's arrival. To honor the sweet family, we decided to use the obvious - confections galore.

For the centerpiece of the soiree, I provided the expectant parents a diaper cake chock full of delicious delights. Since we don't want to leave the sibling out of the celebration, I made a miniature version for her. To keep the guests from attacking the decor, we provided Kara's Cupcakes and sparkling apple cider.

Using Pampers Swaddlers, I formed the base of the cake. Around each layer, I tied a piece of twine and covered it with a pink gingham ribbon. Atop of that, I used a hot glue gun to apply Bubble Gum tape. To add a bit of color, I glued on Necco wafers to each layer. Since most everyone loves a Dum Dum, I placed one in every other diaper. For the cake topper, I took a bottle, filled it with Skittles and tied a bow on top. To keep it all stacked together, I created columns with bamboo skewers and then wrapped it up with pink tulle and a puffed out ribbon.

For the smaller sibling cake, I made one layer with the same diapers and tied a ribbon around it. Instead of hyping wee Katie up on candy, I used four fake flowers for the centerpiece and limited her faux pastry with one Dum Dum and a candy necklace. More than anything, it was a treat for us to watch her open her own gift.

Mommy Dearest: Baby Drools on Toy and Mom Puts It Back!

Mommy Dearest,

My friend and I like to take our kids shopping together once a week. The children keep each other entertained, and we get a chance to gab and buy groceries or birthday gifts and necessities. But, there's one thing that makes me uncomfortable - my friend lets her 3-year-old son and 11-month-old daughter each choose or hold on to a toy while we make our way down through the store. Then, she shelves them before check out. On our last trip to Target, she gave her teething daughter a plush toy that was covered in drool by the time she put it back. As a customer, I wouldn't want to purchase a germ infested item for my child. Do you think her practice is appropriate?

I've seen this happen a lot while out shopping with my own kids. And, it's the reason I reach to the back of the shelf when buying things like stuffed animals. I'd like to think that those that are harder to reach haven't been gnawed or drooled on. While it's one thing to let a child try a rocking horse or bike floor model, which is put out for that purpose, it's another to have them use an item as their own and not pay for it. Is there a reason your friend doesn't pack a teether or small toys in her diaper bag? Or, at a place like Target have her kiddos select something from the $1 bins to occupy them so she can also afford to make the purchases? I'd suggest those options since her current practice makes you uncomfortable.

Cloth Diapers Are Making a Comeback

Cloth diapers are making a comeback! Families are disposing of their disposable nappies since they can save up to $2,000 in the two-and-a-half years most children wear diapers. Now the cloth versions offer flushable liners and fashionable covers that leave parents more inclined to make the switch. For those looking to swap, here are some tips to keep in mind when working with cloth diapers.

The average newborn goes through a dozen diapers a day so have at least two dozen on hand to postpone laundry.
Pre-wash diapers prior to use with hot water and a small amount of detergent to rid the nappies of finishes and natural oils that can irritate a baby’s bum. For all-natural cottons, diapers may need additional washings to achieve maximum absorbency.
Place soiled nappies in a dry diaper pail. Though previous generations used wet pails for soaking, today’s washing machines are strong enough to rid the fabric of stains that are left after ridding the garment of solid waste.
Empty diaper pails and wash the clothes every other day to keep odor to a minimum.
Limit laundry loads to two dozen diapers at a time in order to maximize the machine’s ability to clean them.
Dry diapers with high heat or direct sunlight to aid in sterilization of the garments, but avoid dryer sheets that leave a residue and break down the nappy’s fibers.

The statistics are staggering - disposable diapers take up to 500 years to decompose, and switching to cloth can save hundreds of dollars a year - but mamas continue to use disposable diapers for convenience and save the cloth versions for burping. Today's cloth diapers are a far cry from the bulky terry cloth and sweaty plastic pants our grandparents used.

Bambino Mio is revolutionizing the washable diaper with soft, natural cotton nappies and cute covers that are more breathable than their disposable counterparts, allowing the skin to maintain a constant temperature. Touching and soaking soiled cloth is kept to a minimum given the Bambino Mio System's unique design. The biodegradable liner sheet, which retains solids and is safe to flush down the toilet, is placed inside the cotton nappy that is designed to absorb liquids without being bulky.
