Cookie's Swan Song With Rachel Griffiths

Cookie magazine promises "All the best for your family" and this month, they were right on the money with mama Rachel Griffiths gracing their final cover. While the Australian beauty looks classy and beautiful in the glossy print, it is her outlook on parenting that has me in awe of the career mama. The laid-back yet hardworking mommy shares a beautiful life with her husband, son and two young daughters. As the sage sister on her popular television show, Brothers and Sisters, it is only fitting that she imparts words of wisdom on parenting that every mum should hear:

Motherhood is defined differently here... Child rearing reaches a different level of stress and self-immolation. In Australia, I don't think women stay up all night baking cupcakes for their kids' bake sales when they're a lawyer working an 80-hour week, just to prove they're a good mommy. You just stop at the 7-Eleven and buy the cupcakes. And no one would judge you for it.

The Day the Cookie Crumbled

There are some magazines that define a generation. Good Housekeeping has been a long time friend of baby booming moms as the articles deem certain toys or household gadgets acceptable with their seal of approval. Parenting gives fabulous tips on breastfeeding, play dates and other mom dilemmas while Fit Pregnancy gets mothers-to-be ready for those same activities. When Cookie entered the baby and parenting category four years ago, savvy and hip mums signed up for the Condé Nast rag expecting the best of the best motherhood coverage. And for the most part, that's what they got.

The bright publication offers mums a rainbow of treats from interviews with pop culture's famous mothers to the trendtotting looks of tomorrow and vacation hot spots. Unfortunately the magazine has seen better days and will be closing its doors along with some other Condé staples. The absence of the digest will leave many a mom wondering where to turn for contemporary and chic bebe products and tips. Since Cookie clearly won't be the title to carry the Gen-Moms through motherhood, which publication will you turn to?

Jenny McCarthy Talks Autism, Instincts, and Jim Carrey

Jenny McCarthy is one candid cover girl. We'd expect nothing less from the passionate mother and autism advocate who posed with her son Evan, 7, for the September cover of Cookie. Check out a few of the highlights from the interview.

On how she felt when Evan had a seven-hour seizure and went into cardiac arrest in 2004: I ran out of my house and into my driveway and screamed at the top of my lungs to God to just take him away, because I loved him so much and he was in so much pain.

On Amanda Peet calling parents who don't vaccinate their children "parasites": I think vaccines are one of the greatest things ever invented. I used to be [Peet] before I had a kid with autism.

On the position of Generation Rescue: "Vaccinations are safe - dot, dot, dot - for some kids. Vaccinations are not safe - dot, dot, dot - for other kids. Let’s protect the ones who are weak. We are pro–safe vaccine. Vaccines are just not one size fits all. If you gave everyone in the world penicillin, there would be some adverse effects for some people, and possibly deaths."

On parental instincts: "We’re the generation of parents who are saying, ‘Listen to us. We are the bosses of our children.’ I want parents to realize that, and not get pushed around by doctors who say, ‘Oh, that’s 100 percent safe.’"

On her most humbling mom moment: "Watching Evan pee on a fake tree in a waiting room."

On her relationship with Jim Carrey: "It’s wacky-weird that not only does [Carrey] not want to get married, which I love, but he also doesn’t want to have more kids, which I love."

Amber Valletta Tossed the Television to Inspire Her Son

Model mama Amber Valletta chucked the family's boob tube hoping to inspire creativity in her seven-year-old son, Auden.

And, it seems to be working considering the imaginative lil guy has turned the couch into a doghouse, alien spaceship and the Yellow Submarine.

In the latest issue of Cookie, the actress admits that Auden isn't the only one who has been inspired. She and husband, Christian McCaw also have taken up instruments so the clan can rock out as a fam.

Trendtotting: Holiday Apparel Suggestions

Wondering what to dress your little darlings in for all of those family shindigs this holiday season? Cookie Magazine shared some fab ideas with Al Roker on the Today Show. Here's a quick rundown on the apparel pointers.

Tartan (a type of plaid) is a classic look that never gets old.
Navy and forest green corduroy or velvet pieces for the ladies and a tan suit for the young gents will have everyone looking winter fabulous.
If you have your own childhood vintage pieces, here's a chance to use them. Pair a funky print skirt with a fun top for her and an argyle sweater vest with cords for him.
Channel Leni Klum and let your baby girl don a flowy skirt, hip tights, and metallic shoes for a Boho look. And for the Boho boy, let him wear his favorite jeans with a tweed jacket and a colorful tee.
For the soiree where jeans and tees won't do, dress your dolls up in satin dresses and black tuxedos.

Christy Turlington Is Cookie's Cover Girl

The supermodel made famous for lending her flawless face and body to Chanel, Calvin Klein, and Maybelline ad campaigns, proves she was born with it, and her kids were too, on the December/January cover of Cookie magazine.

The 38-year-old mother of two - Grace, 4 and Finn, 2 - talks candidly about having been 25 weeks pregnant at her wedding to actor, Ed Burns, her husband of four years. And, the ways her wardrobe has changed since she became a mother.
She said:

“[Grace is] so used to seeing me in a pair of men’s jeans, or my yoga clothes, that I get an ‘Oooh, Mommy!’ even when I wear something like this,” Turlington says, pointing to her casual yoke-collared trapeze dress. “Though it’s black, so it’s not her favorite.”

Mommy Alert! Cookie Magazine Contest!

As the weather drops, more and more people head straight to one machine in their gym - the elliptical trainer. According to a 2008 report from the International Health, Racquet, and Sportsclub Association, the number of users of elliptical trainers in health clubs grew sevenfold from 1997 to 2007. And while you may be proud of yourself for making it to the gym and squeezing in some cardio, taking a lackadaisical approach to your elliptical workout and casually spinning your legs while reading a magazine or watching TV isn't going to blast away those holiday cookies. Here, 10 mistakes you frequently make on the elliptical and how to fix them so you maximize calorie burn while adding fun to your ho-hum routine.

Top Workout Ideas For When the Gym Is Too Crowded

1. You’re too lazy to enter your information.
Most machines are calibrated for a 150-pound person - but personalizing your stats will help you get a more accurate calorie read. Aim to burn around 100 calories per 10 minutes, says Jennifer Cassetty, an exercise physiologist.

2. Your resistance is zero.
You might feel like a million bucks spinning at a mile a minute, but without resistance, you’re not going to see results, says Röbynn Europe, a personal trainer at Chelsea Piers in New York City. Make sure that you’re using enough resistance to push and pull through the stride. Then continue at a moderate pace until you feel like you’ve done all you can do. "You shouldn’t feel like you have even five minutes left in you when you step off," she says.

3. You're a sloucher.
Standing up straight helps to lengthen your abs, giving you a chance to engage your core and even work your upper body muscles, Cassetty says. Certified personal trainer Neal I. Pire, MA, CSCS, president of Inspire Training Systems in New Jersey, recommends hopping on a machine with an upper body component so you can engage even more muscles - and blast more fat. Can't find a machine that lets you pump your arms? Let go: some research suggests that leaning on machine armrests during exercise reduces calorie burning.

How to Buy a Cardio Machine

4. Your machine sounds like it’s going to take off.
If you can hear the purr of the machine while you’re exercising, it means that you’re going too fast without enough resistance - which means you're not getting the most calorie burn out of your time, Cassetty says. Keeping a steady, moderate pace at a resistance that forces you to use your muscles will get, and keep, your heart rate up.
