It's not unusual to see a youngster sipping a Starbucks Mocha Frappuccino these days, but does the caffeinated beverage and wee ones mix? While a mama giving her child a sip of her cup o' Joe is one thing, a flight attendant getting an 8-year-old girl a Venti Starbucks coffee is quite another. The parents of Payton Parkerson are upset after their child flew Northwest Airlines's unaccompanied minor program (which costs an additional $100 each way) and was advised to buy a large coffee by the airline attendant who was caring for the charge during a layover in Detroit, The drink had six times the caffeine of a can of Coke and allegedly made the child fall ill and vomit on the plane. While this is an extreme situation, do you think coffee is ever appropriate for children?

Every day around 2 p.m., I feel a desperate need to drink a Coca–Cola. I don't crave the taste as much as I desire the boost in energy it will provide. Even 20 months after giving birth to my first child, my body does not jump out of bed at 6 a.m. ready to take on the day. When reading a book to her before nap time, I often find that I am the one nodding off. This is not uncommon for moms.

The National Sleep Foundation found that more moms are caffeinating themselves to make it through the day. Energy drinks, sodas and coffee are all part of a busy mama's day as she carpools, cooks, cleans and takes care of other duties.

The NSF study found:

More than 65 percent of moms drink caffeinated beverages to get through their day.

Fast food stores like McDonald's are taking advantage of the caffeine hungry audience. The golden arches beat analysts' estimates by increasing latest quarterly profits, which are partially attributed to the rise in coffee sales. Looks like mommies may be loading up on their lattes when ordering a happy meal for junior. When baby number two joins my family, I have a feeling I'll be upping my caffeine intake, too!

Last night on Jon and Kate Plus 8, the Gosselins revealed how they have dealt with raising their twins and sextuplets - coffee. Though they enjoyed the occasional cup of joe prior to parenthood, Kate admitted that she sips half a mug before getting out of bed in the morning.

Coffee Won't Cause Miscarriages

Have your cup of joe and don't worry about junior. Kate Hudson is one celeb mama who indulges in her cup o' caffeine.

A recent study showed that pregnant women who drink caffeine in moderation are not more at risk for a miscarriage. But since less than two cups of coffee were consumed on a daily basis, it's questionable whether drinking more could have an adverse effect.

Dr. David A. Savitz of Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City who conducted the study said past research had similar results. To finish the post, read more.

A Reuters article said:

Most women in the study who drank coffee or other caffeinated beverages consumed about 350 milligrams of caffeine daily before they became pregnant and in very early pregnancy, equivalent to 1.7 7-ounce cups of brewed coffee a day. At the time of the interview, their average caffeine intake had fallen to 200 milligrams.

Savitz and his team followed 2,407 pregnant women and 258 miscarried.

While away last week, I found myself in a pinch. The kids were suds up in the hotel tub, but I hadn't packed the pitcher I normally use to rinse them off.

After a quick look at my options - a ceramic mug, a wastebasket, and an ice bucket, I grabbed the 4-cup coffee pot and got to pouring. It worked like a charm.

The term "all-nighter" takes on a new meaning during parenthood. Once reserved for studying or partying, all-nighters are now made up of crying, diapering, rocking, shushing, and more. Those fortunate enough to have tots sleep soundly through the night may even opt for tackling their to-do list by the light of the moon when everyone else is fast asleep (and can't interrupt). It truly is amazing how much parents are able to accomplish on such little sleep, and a lot of coffee. Whether it's by your own choice, or your child's choice, do you ever pull all-nighters?

Third Time's a Charm: No Ridiculous Pregnancy Comments

People say the most ridiculous things to pregnant women. While expecting my daughter and son, my jaw constantly dropped at the rude, crude and absent-minded things people said to me...with a straight face. BabySugar encountered the same nonsense while she was with child. But, it appears that the third time is the charm since I can really only recall two off comments people have made to me in the past 40 weeks. The first was about a month ago when I was shopping for a friend's wedding gift and the glass saleswoman told me to sit down before my water broke. She then told me to double check with my doctor because she was sure I was having twins. Thanks lady. The next was a few days later when I ran into an acquaintance who told me she was less than half my size when she had her daughter. "Good for you," was all I could muster as a response.

But those two doozies aside, this has been a low-key pregnancy with lots of perks - like complimentary beverages and servers at my favorite cafes betting on the sex of my baby. Who knew baristas were so into procreating? While stopping to pick up water spiked with a little green tea and a coffee for my husband, three different coffee clerks at separate Starbucks locations gave me free drinks! Then, at the farmers market, when I purchased a baguette from a booth, the cashier told me she couldn't possibly charge a lady bringing a baby into the world for bread. In addition to the nice gestures, I haven't been the recipient of much unsolicited advice either. I attribute that to the fact that since I'm traveling with two other kiddos in tow, they either understand I don't have time to chat it up with strangers or they are writing me off as a woman who obviously didn't take the advice offered years ago. Either way, I'm good with it!

How Long Did You Wait to Party Postpartum?

It's one thing to make a coffee run so soon after having baby and quite another to doll up for a night on the town. A newborn rarely allows mommy to step away from the bassinet for longer than two hours at a time, and many mums are simply sleep deprived, which makes dressing up for a swanky soiree a low priority on the to-do list. But there's always someone out there that there that deviates from the norm.

Ellen Pompeo and hubby Chris Ivery just welcomed their wee daughter Stella on Sept. 15 and already the svelte mama was paparazzi ready at David Beckham's Originals by Originals Adidas. She rocked the blue carpet and made postpartum life look all too easy. It appears the glow of her pregnancy has carried over into motherhood for the blessed new mommy.
