At a recent playgroup, one youngster said to my daughter, "My mommy and daddy were playing doctor last night." When I looked up at the mother, she was beet red and she apologized for her child's honest confession. We laughed it off and moved on to more appropriate playground conversation. Parents often use date nights as a way to connect to each other and keep the sparks flying, but let's turn the clocks back a few hours. While dinner and a movie can make for a fun night together, folks can take advantage of the daytime, too. Drop the kids off with grandma or hire a sitter and head for the hills, literally. Mamas wait for what seems like an eternity for their babies, so when they finally arrive it's a big relief. There's another wonderful thing that comes with holding the warm bundle of joy, clearing your calendar of prenatal appointments! But, before women can pencil in other activities, they need to go in for their six week postpartum checkup. Here's what to expect during the visit:

A thorough pelvic exam, including a pap smear, an examination of any episiotomy, vaginal tear, or C-section scar healing and a check of the uterus's return to its prepregnancy size.
A breast exam including a breast cancer screening and checks for infections and abscess that may result from breastfeeding.
Blood work to check for anemia or thyroid issues.
A mental health evaluation to screen for postpartum depression and determine the mother's overall well-being.
A discussion about birth control options. Depending on a woman's breastfeeding goals and her plans for subsequent children, her contraceptive options may vary from her prepregnancy ones. Be sure to discuss all options with your doctor.
Clearance for postpartum sexual activity. Many husbands view the six-week postpartum checkup as the green light for resuming sexual activity. If your doctor does say it is OK to proceed, discuss any tips she might have to get you started again.

People who enjoy doing the horizontal mambo without protection often find themselves entering parenthood. So it goes without saying that those same couples like to return the activity once baby arrives. Expectant mothers who fear the demise of their sex lives due to a vaginal delivery are choosing to have c-sections with the hopes that damages and pain are kept to a minimum. However, there are conflicting reports on whether the method of delivery actually affects one's sex life. Dutch researcher H.J. Brummen, M.D. found:

The study should reassure women who give birth vaginally that except in rare cases, physical factors following childbirth shouldn't affect sexual functioning.

Another study in the Journal of Sexual Medicine stated just the opposite:

Since the turn of the last century, investigators have hypothesized that pregnancy and delivery of an infant can result in anatomical and functional derangement in pelvic floor and intrapelvic organs... Many issues that were not previously incorporated into the planning mode of delivery may now be considered to be of great importance. Among these is sexual function.... We think the results of this study are quite convincing in demonstrating an association between mode of delivery and sexual function.

On Desperate Housewives, Tom and Lynette made an agreement to have sex every day for a month no matter what the circumstance. Sixty-seven percent of lilsugar readers said they do the deed once a week or more frequently so some mamas don't need the nudge.
