Sisterly Secrets Between the Obama Girls

"Sasha, I'm telling you... it's just water!" If there's one confidant a girl can depend on, it's usually her sister. Malia (left) and Sasha Obama attended the "Fiesta Latina" on the South Lawn of the White House where Salsa and Spanish music were the tunes of choice. While we weren't actually privy to the darlings' conversation, we can only imagine what the two were whispering about in the dark. Known for her astute observations, Malia may have decided to announce that she too, wanted an adult wine glass full of sparkling water.

President Obama Wants Kids to Stay in School Longer

President Obama may be leading our nation, but he's just dad to his daughters, Malia and Sasha. And, his new idea to have longer school days and years is none too popular with them. In addition to adding class time, the commander in chief wants schools to be safe places for children to go in the afternoons and on weekends. According to one report, American students spend less days in the classroom but not less hours. It said:

Kids in the US spend more hours in school (1,146 instructional hours per year) than do kids in the Asian countries that persistently outscore the US on math and science tests - Singapore (903), Taiwan (1,050), Japan (1,005) and Hong Kong (1,013). That is despite the fact that Taiwan, Japan, and Hong Kong have longer school years (190 to 201 days) than does the United States (180 days).

Many American parents feel their children have too much academic pressure and are over-scheduled already. What's your take on this educational initiative?

Parents Try to Stop Obama's Speech From Airing in Schools

Do we send our children to school to learn or monitor what they learn? Parents throughout the country are objecting to many public schools' decisions to broadcast President Obama's speech next week. The Commander-in-Chief's address which will be made directly to students at a high school in Virginia, is scheduled to be streamed live on the White House website. Many schools across the nation also plan to air it in their classrooms.

According to the White House, the speech will emphasize "the importance of education and hard work in school, both to the individual and to the nation." But groups of parents, including some in Texas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, South Carolina, and Utah, are accusing the government, and their school districts, of forcing the Democrats' agenda on their children by not reviewing the speech prior to presenting it. Do you think these parents are overreacting?

One precocious, 11-year-old aspiring journalist made his way to the White House! Prior to the inauguration of President Barack Obama, Damon Weaver, then 10, launched his own campaign asking for an interview with the soon to be commander-in-chief. But the young man wasn't looking for a handout; he has a resume that rivals most professional reporters. He has interviewed Vice President Joe Biden, Caroline Kennedy, and others.

His dream came true recently when he sat down and questioned the president on the future of education, his basketball skills, and improvements to school lunches (suggesting that french fries and mangoes be served daily) and closed the session with by extending an offer to be his "homeboy." What Benefits Make Work Life Balance a Reality?

Working parents know that there are choices and sacrifices that must be made when juggling their home and office commitments. Our own Commander-in-Chief recently lamented the events and milestones he missed while on the campaign trail or attending meetings, but whether or not those choices define success in the business world is still up for debate.

As the number of dual-income families continues to rise, many employers are trying to help mom and dad maintain some sort of work-life balance with programs and tools designed to reduce their levels of stress. The White House has given aides with tots priority in receiving laptops and has offered for aides' children to use the newly installed swing set and swimming pool in hopes that parents will see their offspring more. Many private companies offer flex hours to allow parents to work from home or finish up work once the kids have been tucked into bed. What benefits would be most helpful to you as a working parent?

When President Obama was recently questioned about his smoking, our Commander-in-Chief said he was 95 percent cured and doesn't indulge in the habit around his children. His sentiment echoed that of father of eight, Jon Gosselin. Whether the vice is alcohol, smoking, cursing, partying or eating fatty foods, habits are hard to kick. Fifty-four percent of lilsugar readers admitted that they too mix parenting with pre-baby pleasures. Do you find indulgences less offensive as long as they aren't done in the presence of children?

The Obama Girls Get Their Puppy!

There will be paws padding around the White House soon! According to recent reports, Malia and Sasha Obama will be the proud owners of a six-month-old Portuguese Water Dog named Bo. Initially, the first family was going to adopt a rescue animal, but ended up with this pup that was returned to its breeder. The newest resident of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue is supposed to make its official debut this Tuesday.

While there's nothing cuter than the bonds between children and their critters, the Obama girls are mature enough to help raise the animal. Does your family have a pet or are you waiting until your kids are of a certain age?
