Aside from the groans of labor and the sterile aroma, registering at the hospital to deliver a baby can feel a bit like checking into a hotel for a getaway, especially second time mothers. Moms-to-be who are bursting at the seams are typically beyond ready to welcome their wee one to the world and rest up after the tough task of pushing or surgery. From the second mama arrives, the nurses and doctors will be catering to her every need. Crushed ice, fresh bandages, new sheets, emptied garbage cans, and timely meals may be enough to make a mother never want to bid the maternity ward adieu. Add a nursery with a bevy of skilled caretakers to the mix and the place may look like baby utopia. Still, some mothers can't wait to zip up their bags and buckle the new family in for an early departure back to the comforts of their own home.

When Breastfeeding Isn't an Option

Instead of putting baby to boob, some women just start bottle feedings. Whether it's a conscious decision or a biological one, those who don't breastfeed can let the milk dry up naturally or use aids to help keep their chests from producing the body's natural baby food.

As the milk comes in, non-breastfeeding mothers will become expectantly engorged, but unfortunately will not be able to release the pain like nursing ladies. Those looking for relief might try some of these tips.

Moms swear by the power of cold cabbage leaves. Place them in the bra and let them work their magic, replacing them when they have wilted.
Wear a sports bra to compress the chest.
Use ice packs or bags of frozen corn to relieve the pain of swelling.

Bind the breasts using an Ace bandage or the like.
Since mama won't have to worry about her diet, she can relieve the pain by taking Advil or Motrin, which many postpartum mothers already take.
Avoid any breast stimulation, as it will encourage let down.

Jaya Loves Tekeko Pillows Add Japanese Whimsy to Nursery

The absolutely adorable all-organic pillows created by Jaya Loves Tekeko take on a life of their own when placed on your sofa or scattered throughout the nursery. Created by a Miami-based mom who named her company after her two tots, the pillows are made from a bamboo and cotton blend with a cotton shell on the kapok insert. Using water-based inks, the six designs showcase Japanese and modern characters worked into natural settings. By far my favorite of the bunch is the "eggboy design" with its little bandage. Unfortunately, each pillow sets a mama back a pretty penny ($62), but that doesn't mean we can't wish!

Somethings just get better with time. Such is the case with Playmobil. The old school toy maker keeps upping the ante with new additions to their original staples.

Children who love playing "vet," but have pets with zero interest will love Playmobil's Vet Operating Room ($30). The toy experts satisfy wee veterinarian's imaginations with a CT Scanner, changeable x-rays, bandages, casts, bottles of meds and other clinical supplies. And as expected, vet personnel and animals are included. If the clinic is a hit, tots will enjoy adding a cat scratch tree, a vet car, an animal nursery, and an animal clinic to their setup.

If these don't fit their fancy, check out the Fairy Garden, Pirate Island, Circus Ring, or Fire Rescue Starter Kit. Playmobil products are recommended for children four-years and older for good reason. The parts are very small and could pose a choking hazard to wee ones. Those old enough to play with them will most certainly enjoy them as my own lil guinea pig tester did.

Why Didn't Anybody Tell Me: Klutz

Pregnancy turned me into a klutz. I guess I should have expected as much. As fingers swell and ankles balloon, it makes sense that agility would take a nosedive.

Slicing tomatoes became a harrowing task as my fingertips quickly became bloodied and bandaged. Even walking became a conscious activity. About halfway through my pregnancy, my husband and I took a babymoon to Italy, where I fell in the middle of a busy cobblestone street with scooters zooming by me. Luckily, the incident didn't cause bodily harm to baby or me - just my ego. Unfortunately, there's not much you can do about being clumsy. The only two things that helped me were better shoes and heightened awareness.
