Teen mama Bristol Palin is promoting abstinence for the Candie's Foundation. The mom to five-month-old son Tripp spoke out about why girls should wait to have sex on Good Morning America in honor of today being National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy. After saying she wished she had waited, she added:

"My son is a blessing. He's the best thing that ever happened to me. He's the love of my life but I do wish that years from now I could have had the same son."

Wishing For Lucky Dates and Steering Clear of Others

Every day, an estimated 216,000 babies are born worldwide. Many suspect a spike in those birthed today, 9/9/09, as suspicious-minded mamas go for the trifecta date. Some will employ labor-inducing tactics while others may have picked the triple nine time for their scheduled C-section. Those who are still playing the waiting game may be more concerned with not having a babe two days from now on 9/11. A tragic moment in American history, many parents will do their best to keep their baby from making its debut on such an auspicious date. I know a few expectant ladies who are planning on keeping their feet propped up and never leaving bed this coming Friday to keep baby at bay for at least another day. Do you keep historical or superstitious dates in mind when labor is imminent?

Mom Sells Unborn Baby's Naming Rights on eBay

Can't decide what to call your impending babe? Put its naming rights up for auction on eBay! That's what an unemployed Arkansas mother of six is doing for her seventh baby.

With her husband in the Navy and stationed hundreds of miles away, and her financial troubles growing, Lavonne Drummond placed the ad on Sunday to raise money to "pay for a new car (one that can fit my BIG family) some baby cloths, and maybe if some one is generious [sic] enough a new house. but we are despritly [sic] in need of a new car."

The winning bidder will pick the legal first name for her son and meet him after he is born on Sept. 16. With just three days left in the auction, Drummond is a long way from the $25,000 she hopes to raise, but a flood of traffic on the site has raised the current bid to $2,550.

In generations past, expectant women might have made a mad dash to the altar, but times have changed so much so that rates of babes born out of the commitment of marriage are at a record high. One report said:

Nearly 40 percent of babies born in the United States in 2007 were delivered by unwed mothers, according to data released last month by the National Center for Health Statistics. The 1.7 million out-of-wedlock births, of 4.3 million total births, marked a more than 25 percent jump from five years before.

Sip-and-See Baby Shower: Theme, Guest List, and Invitations

We’re continuing to celebrate mamas-to-be this month with our extensive baby shower planning guides. We’ve seen showers in celebration of older siblings, as well as one that brought some nostalgia to the table. This week, we fete the mama and newborn who were not ready to be the centers of attention before the birth with a sip-and-see shower.

Whether it is cultural superstition or a woman who has faced miscarriage or troubled pregnancies in the past, the sip-and-see shower celebrates the new family by welcoming relatives and friends with an opportunity to meet the newborn for the first time. Typically held a month or two after the baby is born, we’re structuring this party as an open house to celebrate the entire new family – mother, father, and baby – because at this point, dad is likely changing his share of diapers and helping with feedings and the like. While some guests may bring a present, many will have already sent one upon the lil one’s arrival.

The shower should be held at a friend or family member’s home in order to keep germs and mess out of the baby’s house. Because this is an open house, the guest list does not need to be quite as limited as it would be for a sit-down meal, but it is wise to make it adult only. Getting in the Door One Tiny Foot at a Time

Does quality childcare set kids on the collegial path? It used to seem like Ivy League Universities looked to creme de la creme high schools for applicants. But, before that the students had to attend elite grade schools. As the public school system continues to flounder in certain states, the competition to get into esteemed schools has elevated and leaves parents vetting for openings which are few and far between. Some moms and pops set up a plan before their child leaves the cradle or even takes his first breath!

In certain metropolitan cities, pregnant women put their fetus's last name (first one pending) on preschool wait lists and the application process in New York and San Francisco has become more like college admissions except the pupils can't write their essays because they don't recognize their alphabets yet!

Parents trying to get precious into the top preschools are now turning to elite day-cares and playgroups to get the extra edge on competition. Often times, those running the groups have connections that will benefit families in the preschool pursuit. So even though baby can barely walk or talk, the wheels are set in motion for a lifetime of privileged education.

At the rate things are going, a babe's future is going to depend on the hospital in which they were born. If mama labors in the right maternity ward, perhaps she will have access to the best lactation consultant who will refer her to a particular mommy group. The mother's group will then direct her to the popular music and yoga classes that will get her the in to the "it" daycare. From there, it's a breeze. Preschool, grade school, high school and college are just hurdles to be had.

Baby Wellness: Scheduling a C-Section

Mamas-to-be who plan on scheduling their babe's birth to coincide with a special day or one that is convenient need to think again. A new study of American births shows that babies do best when they debut no earlier than seven days before their due date. Even a few days can make a difference in the child's lung development. One report said:

The rate of Caesarean sections in the United States is at an all-time high, accounting for about 31 percent of births. There are lots of reasons: older moms, multiple births, the threat of malpractice lawsuits, the preference of mothers and doctors and the risks of having a vaginal birth after a previous Caesarean.

Other complications of infants born at 37 weeks included infections and low blood sugar.
