Hillary Clinton Suspends Campaign and Endorses Obama

Hillary Clinton has just ended her bid for the White House within walking distance of the 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue residence she's fought the past 17 months to call home again.

Previewing the contents of the speech to supporters this week, Clinton said, "I have said throughout the campaign that I would strongly support Senator Obama if he were the Democratic Party's nominee and I intend to deliver on that promise."

The promise was just delivered on in a speech at the National Building Museum in DC. Supported by Bill, Chelsea, legions of fans, and those parents who watched her campaign saying to their kids, "see? You can be anything you want to be." Clinton detailed the fruits of her remarkable campaign, and then extended her support to her former rival, saying:

Today as I suspend my campaign, I congratulate him on the extraordinary race he has run. I endorse him and throw my full support behind him. I ask all of you to work as hard for Barack Obama as you have for me. . . ensuring that Barack Obama walks through the doors of the Oval Office on January, 20, 2009!

Following up that strong endorsement saying:

We cannot let this moment slip away. We have come too far and accomplished too much. . . today I am standing with Senator Obama to say, 'yes, we can!'

It's been a long fight, one that ends today not without emotion. Clinton may not be the only person nursing bruises from ending her quest - supporters will have to decide if they can now endorse Obama as wholeheartedly as Clinton did this morning. The psychiatry correspondent for FOX News said this individual healing process can't be rushed, and supporters will have to warm up to Obama slowly. "Pretending Clinton support translates in a wholesale way to Obama needlessly inserts falsehood into a movement that all of us, regardless of our politics, would have to admit is fueled by passion."

Passion and bucks. Now that the end is here, Hillary and Obama are apparently in deep negotiation as to how to retire the $30 million campaign debt Hillary's dug - with the bonus to Obama that she'll in turn fund raise for his campaign. Advisers think she could bring in $100 million for his general fight.

When Hillary and Obama had their secret meeting Thursday evening at Senator Feinstein's home, they spoke for an hour and seemed to salve some of the campaign wounds. How long will it take for supporters and the party to follow? Will the Democrats find a way to unite, Unity Ticket or not?

Carla Bruni gave birth to a baby girl in Paris today. It's the first child the first couple of France has had together, although they both have children from previous relationships and Nicolas Sarkozy is also a grandfather. Nicolas married Carla, a singer and former Italian top model, in 2008 at the Élysée Palace. He was already president, and recently divorced, when they began dating, and their brief courtship grabbed headlines. Even so, they don't plan on being public with their new addition. Carla has said they won't release a picture of their daughter, something she doesn't believe the French public is interested in anyway. Despite their preference for some privacy, we have seen the two enjoying their newlywed glow and official engagements together. Let's check out some of their chicest and sweetest moments now.

Jay-Z Takes His Girl Beyoncé on a Postanniversary Paris Getaway

Beyoncé Knowles led the way for Jay-Z as they left a restaurant in Paris this evening. They dined along the Champs-Élysées during their latest couple's getaway, which comes just weeks after their three year wedding anniversary on April 4. Beyoncé's back to traveling by her husband's side following a trip to the West Coast, where she shot a new music video. She spent time in the desert wearing sexy costumes and dancing to "Girl (Who Runs the World)", which was released in full version this morning and is the first single off her upcoming album. The man behind the lens was Francis Lawrence, who also directed the upcoming Water For Elephants with Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson. Francis spoke to us Sunday at the world premiere of Water For Elephants and revealed that Beyoncé wanted to do something completely new for her fans with the shoot. Beyoncé will show off even more of her stuff early this Summer when she takes the stage as a headliner at June's Glastonbury Music Festival, just like Jay did in 2008.

Lara Logan Puts a New Face on Egypt's Old Harassment Problem

As details about American reporter Lara Logan's sexual assault make the news, Egypt's ongoing sexual harassment problem should make headlines, too. Isolated from her film crew, Logan was stripped, punched, and slapped by a crowd of men in Tahrir Square, an extreme example of a common problem in Egypt.

A couple of years ago, a survey found that two out of three Egyptian men admit to harassing women in public. In 2008, a man was sentenced to jail for sexual assault for the first time in Egypt; the man had followed the victim in his car, slowing down to repeatedly grope her as she walked by. Only after the victim fought back, dragged her harasser to the police station, and then went public with the incident, was the case treated seriously.

Last year 678, a film about an Egyptian woman who is regularly molested on public transportation, became the first movie to call attention to the problem (see the movie poster above). And the US State Department has long warned American women that they are at risk of harassment, issuing this travel warning: "Unescorted women are vulnerable to sexual harassment and verbal abuse. The Embassy has received increasing reports over the last several months of foreigners being sexually groped in taxis and in public places."

Using the same tech tools that helped spark the revolution, some Egyptians are attempting to end the epidemic. HarassMap.org lets women report incidents of sexual harassment via SMS. The reports are then visualized on a map. The site hopes that mapping the occurrences will act as an advocacy, prevention, and response tool. But most importantly the map will hopefully expose the severity of the problem, much like Lara Logan's ordeal has.
