Lily, the "Food Insecure" Puppet

Introduced in a special earlier this month to raise awareness about hunger and poverty, Lily is a 7-year-old girl representing one of the 17 million American children that the Department of Agriculture estimates are "food insecure," meaning they have limited or uncertain access to affordable and nutritious food. Some critics feel that Lily isn't an accurate portrayal of hunger, given that most children in this country are much better off than their peers in third-world countries.
