Turn Those Letters to Santa Into Something Memorable

Young believers in Santa Claus know that writing a letter to the North Pole is a task worth completing when it comes to getting the gifts they want.

Young believers in Santa Claus know that writing a letter to the North Pole is a task worth completing when it comes to getting the gifts they want. Whether they are asking for a shiny new sled or a Zhu Zhu Pet Hamster, wee ones delight in making a lengthy list for the bearded one and his lil helpers. When the gig is up, it's entertaining to take a look back at the lists from years past. Instead of tossing them in the recycling bin, moms can store them in a secret place where they can be shared later in life. A bound book with the requested gifts may turn out to be the best gift of all! If mama's short on ideas, check out our awesome holiday gift guide!

Do Tell: What Are Your Favorite Thanksgiving Traditions?

Thanksgiving is almost here, and it might just be my favorite holiday.

Thanksgiving is almost here, and it might just be my favorite holiday. Every year my family gets together for a big party at my aunt's house. I always look forward to the classic food like turkey and mashed potatoes, but I also love the dishes specific to my family, like my mom's spicy jalapeno cranberry sauce or the creamed onions made according to my grandma's recipe. After dinner, we all head to the living room hoping to beat our food comas with a spirited game of charades.

These are the traditions that I will be looking forward to all week. What Thanksgiving traditions do you enjoy?

Start Giving Thanks Early This Year

The turkey is cooked, the gravy is steaming and the cranberries are waiting to pop.

The turkey is cooked, the gravy is steaming and the cranberries are waiting to pop. Just before families dig into their fruitful feast, they sit down to give thanks for the past year's blessings. Instead of waiting until the end of the month, start a new family tradition and have everyone start writing down things they are thankful for at the dinner table every night leading up to the festivities. Hand out a pen and piece of paper to each person. After they write (or in wee cases — dictate) have them toss the papers into one bucket to be read at the holiday family gathering. It is sure to provide a warm and fuzzy moment for everyone when weeks full of thanksgivings are read aloud at the table. Take it a step further and save the scraps in a book that can be cherished every year.

Halloween

What Are Your Family Halloween Traditions?

Whether you're visiting the pumpkin patch, carving pumpkins, or trick-or-treating, most every family has some sort of Halloween tradition they follow year after year.

Whether you're visiting the pumpkin patch, carving pumpkins, or trick-or-treating, most every family has some sort of Halloween tradition they follow year after year. Some do all or none of the above. As my children grow older, it is apparent that our once simple night of staying in and greeting neighborhood goblins is over and a long list of parties and candy collecting is ahead. What family traditions do you celebrate for the spooky holiday?

Back to School

Do You Have a First-Day-of-School Ritual?

It may be hard bidding camp adieu or putting all of that pool paraphernalia away, but like all good things — Summer must come to an end.

It may be hard bidding camp adieu or putting all of that pool paraphernalia away, but like all good things — Summer must come to an end. In anticipation for the big first day back to school, mother may buy her child a new outfit, polish an apple for the teacher, or bake a celebratory cake for the inaugural day.

At my house, every last night of Summer ended with my sister and I laying out our outfits for the first day of school on our beds. Every detail was tended to so all we had to do was wake up, shower, and get dressed. Before we got in the car, my mother took a picture of us marking the start of each school year. I hope to keep the tradition going for my own wee ones. Do you have any first day of school rituals?

Awkward! Wedding Planning With Fiancé Causing Tension

I know a very modern bride who is beginning to wonder if she really knows the guy she's marrying.

I know a very modern bride who is beginning to wonder if she really knows the guy she's marrying. It's not that she's having second thoughts — it's just that planning their wedding is highlighting differences of opinion about tradition and convention she didn't know were there.

For example, this bride is hip to the fact that weddings are not unique events. Lots of people get married. At the same time, she wants her wedding to have a personal, nonconformist touch. This is where the conflict with her more traditional fiancé has come in. He values conformity and sees it as a social good. Unlike his fiancée, he actually cares what other people think.

So what are the differences of opinion they have about how they should plan their wedding? To find out read more

Will You Hunt For Easter Eggs?

It is an Easter tradition for my mother to host an egg hunt for my family.

It is an Easter tradition for my mother to host an egg hunt for my family. She always invites cousins, uncles, aunts, her sister, our grandmother, nieces, nephews and close friends over for quiche, ham and sweets, but the kids only have one thing on their mind — eggs. I, on the other hand, always enjoy sitting back and relaxing during the festivities while my relatives fight over holding my children.

Mommy Dearest: I Don't Want My Son to Be "The IV"

Mommy Dearest, I'm seven months pregnant with a baby boy and so looking forward to meeting the little guy.

Mommy Dearest,

I'm seven months pregnant with a baby boy and so looking forward to meeting the little guy. But, I am also dreading the birth because my husband's family just assumes that my child will be the fourth in a long line of family members named John Patrick. I want to pick a unique name for my son. My husband goes by Trip and his father goes by Jack and his grandfather is John, but everyone still knows they all have the same name. How do I break the news to my extended family without breaking their hearts?

Relationship Protocol: What Are You Still Splurging on as a Couple?

Money is tight for pretty much everyone these days, and no matter what you do to save, it's close to impossible to cut back on everything all the time.

Money is tight for pretty much everyone these days, and no matter what you do to save, it's close to impossible to cut back on everything all the time. Most couples I know have rituals — Friday night date nights, going to the movies on Sundays, or playing on a bowling league — but whatever their tradition is, it probably costs money.

If you're having to pick and choose what activities to keep in the mix, tell me, what are you still spending money on as a couple?

Relationship Protocol: What Holiday Tradition Have You Created?

I think one of the best parts about being in a relationship is creating new traditions together, unique to the life you live as a couple.

I think one of the best parts about being in a relationship is creating new traditions together, unique to the life you live as a couple. Of course, incorporating each other's family traditions is always fun, but so is instating an after-Thanksgiving hike with your hubby every year or a putting up Christmas lights while eating your leftovers. If this is something you've done in your relationship, tell us, what holiday traditions have you created with your significant other?
