Tommy's Preppy Pool Birthday Party

Kim Stoegbauer of The TomKat Studio knows how to throw a fashionable fete, so it's no surprise that her son Tommy's seventh birthday bash — a preppy pool party — is as stylish as it is fun!

Kim Stoegbauer of The TomKat Studio knows how to throw a fashionable fete, so it's no surprise that her son Tommy's seventh birthday bash — a preppy pool party — is as stylish as it is fun! "It has become tradition for us to throw a big pool party each year for his birthday since we live in Arizona and it’s usually over 100 degrees by mid June," Kim says. "We were excited that our pool and backyard were finished just in the nick of time! The party colors and style were inspired by the fabulous navy and green cabana stripe pillows and umbrellas that I recently ordered from Pottery Barn to add some color to the backyard decor." Check out all the details of this prepster party (including TomKat printables), beautifully captured by photographer Vicki Lynn.

Summer Must-Have: The Perfect Picnic Blanket

To me, Summer is all about being in the backyard, walking around barefoot.

To me, Summer is all about being in the backyard, walking around barefoot. Unfortunately, my daughter hasn't yet learned the joys of feeling the grass under her feet, so a picnic blanket or outdoor mat is still a must-have now that I'm a yard-owning suburbanite as it was when I spent Summer afternoons at the park when I was a city dweller. If you're in the same boat, consider investing in one of the five outdoor blankets pictured above. Most are waterproof, and all fold up nicely to fit over your shoulder or in your picnic basket. Skip Hop's version even comes with its own cooler bag! Believe us, your grass-averse kids will thank you.

Clockwise from top left: JJ Cole Essentials Blanket in gray and red ($23); Land of Nod Shore Thing Beach Blankets ($49); Pottery Barn Kids Fairfax Beach Blanket, available in pink and navy ($60–$65); Tuffo Water-Resistant Outdoor Blanket With Carrying Case ($32); Skip Hop Central Park Blanket and Cooler Bag ($45).

Put down the umbrella and celebrate the sun!

Put down the umbrella and celebrate the sun! A celebration for a mama-to-be may call for a shower, but it's usually filled with sunshine and bright smiles. No one knows this better than Kim Stoegbauer, a party-planning guru and the founder of the TomKat Studio. She's teamed up with one of the ultimate baby-gear emporiums — Pottery Barn Kids — to share her baby-shower know-how with other moms-to-be. Her Sunshine Baby Shower is featured in on the company's new "Parties and Celebrations" section of the PBK website, along with party-planning tips, how-to videos, and free downloads so anyone can re-create her sophisticated style.

Pottery Barn Kids iPhone App Tries Costumes on For Kids

Fitting room wars no more!

Fitting room wars no more! When it comes to trying on Halloween costumes, your children don't even have to unsnap their shirts. Pottery Barn Kids has an inventive and free costume finder iPhone app that allows a mom to upload a picture of her kiddo and then see the way he or she looks in different costume options before making a purchase. The technology can come in handy for families who don't want to brave the mall with their big brood or new parents who wonder what their babe will look like in a certain ensemble. If even the thought of trick or treating makes you nostalgic, scan your own childhood photo and slip some virtual costumes on for size.

Pimp Your Crib: Lighting For Baby's Nursery

God said, "Let there be light," but he didn't say it had to be a high voltage fluorescent one beaming from a heinous fixture in baby's room.

God said, "Let there be light," but he didn't say it had to be a high voltage fluorescent one beaming from a heinous fixture in baby's room. One of the easiest ways to quickly improve the state of a nursery is to install a new light fixture. With all of the options floating around, you can't go wrong. There's one to fit every style and budget.

  • Simple: For a room that has details in every nook and cranny, it's nice to keep the lighting simple with a pendant lamp from Serena and Lily ($169).
  • Modern: If baby's room has the Ouef crib and she's rollin' in the Orbit stroller. Keeping with the modern theme. Design Within Reach ($300) has a balloon fixture that will complement baby's style.
  • Classic: If you're more the MacLaren type with gingham bedding, you might like a chandelier that passes the test of time from Pottery Barn Kids ($129). You can buy the different shades ($9) to match it up to the rest of your decor.
  • Funky Cool: For those who have created a wicked cool nursery and don't mind throwing some cash towards the glow, invest in the sweet Anthropologie Bird chandelier ($798). We know it's a hefty price to pay but those lil birds are heavenly.
  • Luxurious: Melania Trump's nursery made you all a flutter. If you crave Baron's style with gold gilded angels and drapes touching the ground, luxury is your middle name. Your prince or princess deserves the best with a Bellacor antique style lamp ($461).

If you know someone handy, they might be able to install it for you. If not, don't fret — most electricians can install a light fixture in no time. Pretty soon your (I mean baby's) nursery will look like the dreamland you always imagined.
