Do You Still Believe in the Healing Power of Cocoa Butter?

Lots of mothers swear by the benefits of slathering their growing bellies and boobs with cocoa butter.

Lots of mothers swear by the benefits of slathering their growing bellies and boobs with cocoa butter. The ingredient is mixed into affordable balms and creams that women often purchase as a preventative measure upon finding out they are pregnant. But, new research suggests that cocoa butter lotions and potions have little to no benefit. One report said:

The largest study on the subject was published in 2008 by a team of dermatologists and obstetricians. It followed 175 women in their first pregnancies, some randomly assigned to apply a cocoa butter lotion each day and others assigned to use a placebo. Neither the subjects nor the researchers knew who was using which treatment. After many months, the researchers found no difference in the development or severity of marks, known medically as striae, over the abdomen, breasts or thighs.

The piece suggests Vitamin E as an effective alternative. What's your opinion?

How Did Your Relatives Plan to Greet the New Arrival?

Your bags are packed and you're ready to go, but how soon can you get there?

Your bags are packed and you're ready to go, but how soon can you get there? The birth of a first child is a momentous occasion that friends and family are eager to share with a new mom and pop. While some mamas would prefer to limit their hospital well-wishers, others are happy to spend their lil one's first few days surrounded by celebratory visitors. For close relatives that do not live near the mama-to-be, planning to be present for the birth of the baby is much like a game of chess – strategic planning and all.

A friend on the East Coast is trying to figure out just how quickly she can get across the country once her sister-in-law goes into labor. Not knowing exactly when the baby will begin its decent, she is not sure if she should book a trip based on the babe's due date and just hang around waiting for the arrival, or if she should just plan on paying full-fare and purchasing her ticket when the contraction begins. How did your long-distance supporters plan their visits to greet your new arrival?

The Shower Hug: Ga Ga or Gag?

Showers are few and far between for new mothers, but a few minutes under the rushing water can give them a new lease on postpartum life.

Showers are few and far between for new mothers, but a few minutes under the rushing water can give them a new lease on postpartum life. Warm water can lead to painful letdown so one woman created the Shower Hug ($30), a terry knit wrap with a Velcro closure designed to ease the pain and protect the bustline. The fast-drying material can be wrung out after a shower and hung to dry until the next time mom finds a few minutes for herself. Would you invest in one?

What to Expect at Your Postpartum Checkup

Mamas wait for what seems like an eternity for their babies, so when they finally arrive it's a big relief.

Mamas wait for what seems like an eternity for their babies, so when they finally arrive it's a big relief. There's another wonderful thing that comes with holding the warm bundle of joy, clearing your calendar of prenatal appointments! But, before women can pencil in other activities, they need to go in for their six week postpartum checkup. Here's what to expect during the visit:

  • A thorough pelvic exam, including a pap smear, an examination of any episiotomy, vaginal tear, or C-section scar healing and a check of the uterus's return to its prepregnancy size.
  • A breast exam including a breast cancer screening and checks for infections and abscess that may result from breastfeeding.
  • Blood work to check for anemia or thyroid issues.
  • A mental health evaluation to screen for postpartum depression and determine the mother's overall well-being.
  • A discussion about birth control options. Depending on a woman's breastfeeding goals and her plans for subsequent children, her contraceptive options may vary from her prepregnancy ones. Be sure to discuss all options with your doctor.
  • Clearance for postpartum sexual activity. Many husbands view the six-week postpartum checkup as the green light for resuming sexual activity. If your doctor does say it is OK to proceed, discuss any tips she might have to get you started again.

Lil Tip: Hospitals Offer Postpartum Spas

I'd like to make an appointment for one healthy (and quick) delivery, a massage and facial please.

I'd like to make an appointment for one healthy (and quick) delivery, a massage and facial please. The hours and days following childbirth are not necessarily a woman's most glamorous. You may have experienced the miracle of childbirth, but it has left you exhausted, sore and with dry skin.

In a trend that I can get behind, a number of hospital maternity wards are now offering spa services for new moms. Some hospitals, like Peoria, Illinois' Proctor Hospital offer the services through another department in the hospital, while others bring in outside spa companies, like Minneapolis' Go Home Gorgeous, which has therapists on call to arrive after delivery. With spa packages that include treatments for feet, shoulders, backs and necks, it is certainly worth looking into the availability of such services at your hospital.

Which Postnatal Side Effect Most Surprised You?

If you are like me, you spent a lot of time reading and preparing for the birth of your first baby, but did little to prepare yourself for what your body would go through after the delivery.

If you are like me, you spent a lot of time reading and preparing for the birth of your first baby, but did little to prepare yourself for what your body would go through after the delivery. My pregnancy books didn't discuss much after the actual birth and the photos in the magazines tricked me into believing that new mothers were beaming and beautiful when callers came to visit.

Needless to say, I was unpleasantly surprised when I woke to night sweats for the next three months, found clumps of hair in my hands during showers and was overcome by dryness in every inch of my body. I'm prepared for these fun side effects this time, but wondered which were most surprising to you?
