Have a Pair of Happy Feet — Even When It's Cold Out

Slipping your feet into sandals and flip-flops in the Summer is reason enough to keep up with your pedicures.

Slipping your feet into sandals and flip-flops in the Summer is reason enough to keep up with your pedicures. Don't skimp on your feet upkeep once the temperatures cool, though. "Caring for your feet in the Winter is very important because heels can thicken and crack," says Dr. Elizabeth Tanzi, codirector of the Washington Institute of Dermatologic Laser Surgery in Washington DC. "Those cracks can become painful and infected if left untreated."

Getting a weekly pedicure would be choice. But if you're looking for something a little more wallet-friendly, there are plenty of at-home procedures for those looking to smooth out their soles. "Use a thick moisturizer containing urea or glycolic acid under socks at night," Dr. Tanzi says. Layer on a lotion like Kiehl's Imperial Body Balm ($42) all over your feet, and slip on your favorite socks before bed. Dr. Tanzi also suggests exfoliating with a pumice stone, or using a similar dead-skin-removal method, once a week in the shower. Your feet may be stuffed into your warmest boots, but they'll be healthy enough for a spur-of-the-moment trip to the Caribbean. Hey, it could happen.

A New York City salon is taking pity on the worn-out heels and arches of runners and crafting a pedicure that'll take into consideration their unique needs. Eve Salon in NYC's West Village neighborhood is offering its "Runner's Pedicure" just in time for Sunday's ING New York City Marathon. The speciality pedi keeps nails cut short to to avoid damage during high-intensity pavement-hitting and spends extra time on softening, but not removing, calluses (they're there for protection!). Runners can sneak a little massage into the salon chair, too: Each session comes equipped with a seven minute calf and foot rub.

Mommy's Lil Helper: Ped Egg

Before having babies, I used to pamper my hands and feet every so often with a relaxing mani and pedi.

Before having babies, I used to pamper my hands and feet every so often with a relaxing mani and pedi. Since becoming a mother, I have hardly had time to sit in a vibrating massage chair with someone else tending to my toes. With sandal season approaching, I needed to find a way to clean up my feet without dealing with spa appointments and sitters.

While waiting in line at the local Walgreens, I spotted the "As Seen on TV Ped Egg" ($10). A sucker for point-of-purchase sales, I grabbed one and decided to give it a go. Ladies, it's all it's cracked up to be. Right after my shower this morning, I tested it and in less than five minutes, my callouses were gone! Smoother than if a professional had done it, I eagerly lathered my feet up with some creamy lotion and slipped on my open toe shoes. Now if I could only figure out how to paint my nails like the pros...

Does Pampering Send the Wrong Message?

I remember getting my first manicure before my eighth grade dance.

I remember getting my first manicure before my eighth grade dance. It was a big deal and I appreciated how special the gift was from my mother. I didn't notice my eyebrows were bushes to be reckoned with until my first year of college. Thankfully, while growing up I never felt the need to excessively beautify myself as I had confidence. For kids these days, it's a different story.

The dark haired preteen seemed to enjoy the perks of being a material girl as she indulged in a mani-pedi. And, wearing a skull hair band and black leggings, the eleven-year-old opted for dark polish to finish off her look.

These days tons of tots are primping since some businesses cater to child clientele. Lil ladies and gents as young as two are heading to salons to get their nails filed or painted.

What do you think about the trend?
