Should Chinese Parents Be Compensated For Loss of Only Children?

Being predeceased by your child is incredibly painful for any parent, but an official said that loss is exacerbated if the mother and father have a sole offspring.

Being predeceased by your child is incredibly painful for any parent, but an official said that loss is exacerbated if the mother and father have a sole offspring. This is the case for the families of the Chinese exchange students who died during the New Zealand earthquake last month. An Associated Press report said:

Chinese Embassy official Cheng Lei said Monday that Chinese quake victims had lost not just their only child, but also a future breadwinner.

He said New Zealand should consider providing additional financial assistance to those families.

"You can expect how lonely, how desperate they are ... not only from losing loved ones, but losing almost entirely the major source of economic assistance after retirement," Cheng told Radio New Zealand.

Mom's Best Friend: Is Having One Child Really Easier?

Is life tougher with a single child?

Is life tougher with a single child? Sure parents of one can focus all their attention on their kiddo and get away with taking the youngster most anywhere. No one minds adding another chair to the table or making room for one more person at the movies, but parents of two, three, four, or more lil ones usually have to hire a sitter. While couples with one tot reap the rewards of certain circumstances, those who have a couple catch a break when the siblings play together. Mom and pops don't have to double as playmates. A woman recently told me she was considering baby number two because another child would be easier than always having to engage her daughter. What's your opinion?

Do Only Children Have Better Relationships With Their Parents?

Is three the magic number?

Is three the magic number? When it comes to the family unit, does an only child bond better with his or her parents because the kid doesn't have to compete with siblings for attention and affection? Or, does a bit of a bridge between mom, pop, and child in the form of siblings make growing up less stressful on a youngster?

No Entourage, Do Only Children Get Bullied More?

When your wee one hits the playground, who has his back?

When your wee one hits the playground, who has his back? A mother of one recently told me that her sweet 13-month-old daughter has been bullied at the park, even by kindergartners. Thinking back, I remembered my girl being knocked out of the slide line and having sand thrown in her eyes on a couple of occasions. Then my son was born and things changed because when my daughter sat in the sandbox, she had a sidekick. No one messes with my littlest guy since he's got an entourage in his two older siblings. Do bullies spare brothers and sisters and target only children?

One Child Isn't the Loneliest Number

One is not necessarily the loneliest number.

One is not necessarily the loneliest number. Some say there are tremendous perks to having a single child — parents can focus all their attention on that offspring and it's the economical, even green approach to building a family.

According to the US Census Bureau, women approaching the end of their childbearing years in 2004 had an average of 1.9 children, compared with 3.1 twenty years earlier. While the number of children a family decides to have is often made for them due to health issues, others make the choice based on financial factors like ability to provide the best education, world travel and overall experience for their kids.

Women who are not “going for two," often find themselves having to defend their decision to well-meaning friends and family who inquire about sibling expansion. If you are set with a single child, how have you handled the pressure? Or if you never dreamed of having just one kiddo, tell us your reasoning.
