Do Sobbing Parents Steal the Spotlight? Bill Clinton Thinks So

There's nothing more common than a parent crying at their kiddo's preschool graduation or wedding.

There's nothing more common than a parent crying at their kiddo's preschool graduation or wedding. Milestones can be a lot for mom or pop to handle, but does the unbridled sentiment turn attention from the child to the parent? Bill Clinton thinks so. And the former president doesn't plan to tear up as he walks Chelsea down the aisle later this month. He told CNN:

I am going to try not to cry because this isn't about me, it's about her. And if I am crying then it becomes partly about me.

When LilSugar Readers' Children Reached Learned Milestones

Parents may have plans, but that doesn't mean their children abide by them!

Parents may have plans, but that doesn't mean their children abide by them! A mom can think her tot is going to lunge from the stroller once he starts walking, but some wee ones just enjoy the ride. The same goes for feeding themselves and even moving out of the house. We were curious when your kiddos tackled learned milestones, and LilSugar readers chimed in.

How Did Your Baby Develop According to Milestone Markers?

If you sit around at the park long enough, you're bound to hear a mother bragging about her child speeding past the milestone markers earlier than expected or a distressed mama who is worried that her son isn't on the same page as his peers.

If you sit around at the park long enough, you're bound to hear a mother bragging about her child speeding past the milestone markers earlier than expected or a distressed mama who is worried that her son isn't on the same page as his peers. Developmental calendars are posted in the pediatrician's office and at each well checkup of his first year of life, doctors ask the standard questions to see how baby is chugging along in comparison with others of the same age. While most every mum is bound to worry at some time or another, each child is different and will grow into his own at his own pace. So tell mommy, where did your child fall on the milestone markers?

Is Getting Your Daughter's Ears Pierced a Big Deal?

Getting your ears pierced in my grammar school was a huge deal.

Getting your ears pierced in my grammar school was a huge deal. My mom finally let me puncture my earlobes with tiny gold studs when I was 10. I still remember what I wore to the mall and how my classmates inspected the jewels when I got to school. In the years that followed, my friends and I would make trips to the mall just to buy earrings and expand our collections. For some people, ear piercing is a cultural tradition done when lil girls are born or still babies. Other parents believe it's a right of passage into adolescence.

I've heard stories about moms who made their daughters wait until graduation or celebrated their first period by allowing them to pierce their ears. I didn't have a plan so when my 5-year-old told me she wanted to get hers done the other day, I said okay. She loves fashion, putting outfits together and creating her own style, but next month she'll be heading to kindergarten at a private school that requires her to wear a uniform. Choosing earrings will still allow her a bit of creativity.

The other reason I'm granting her wish is because our new baby will soon make its debut. Before my son was born, we took a trip to Los Angeles to visit my best friend for a girls' weekend and my daughter still talks about it. I want her to have the same type of special memory prior to this sibling — not just because she's about to get another sister or brother, but because she's growing up too. What's your opinion on ear piercing?

What's Your Opinion of Preschool Graduations?

Two years ago, I dropped my little girl off at nursery school.

Two years ago, I dropped my little girl off at nursery school. There were no tears shed. She waved goodbye and walked off with a friend she made in line before the doors opened. This morning, I sat in the preschool's auditorium as my daughter took the stage, sang and danced with her classmates, and hugged her teachers goodbye. It was the kind of performance only a mother (OK, grandparents and relatives) could love, but then a slideshow of pictures set to music played and all of the sudden it hit home — my firstborn is well on her way in life. She has her own interests, opinions, and friends.

In the Fall, she'll start kindergarten, our son will begin preschool, and their sibling-to-be will enter the world. I never went to nursery school, so I didn't really understand the graduation hoopla until today. Who cares how small a child milestone may seem? They are all certainly worth celebrating. What's your opinion?

Why Didn't Anybody Tell Me: Second Kids Learn Quick!

We waited for what seemed like an eternity (one year) for our firstborn to walk, but her younger brother was up and running before we even had the chance to realize it might be time.

We waited for what seemed like an eternity (one year) for our firstborn to walk, but her younger brother was up and running before we even had the chance to realize it might be time.

That's how everything has been with my son. The other day, he climbed into our SUV, got in his booster and buckled himself up (a pleasant change from him finagling his way out). All the time we've spent prepping our daughter for her kindergarten screenings has paid off in an unexpected way — the lil guy counts the 15 stairs up to our flat and sings his version of the alphabet at random.

While parents take pictures of every step and breath their first child takes, when the second baby is born things are a bit more lax and they are able to just soak up the world around them. And, those human sponges seem ready for the ride whether it's a carpool to school or a trip to the playground. Did you find this to be true with your children?

Lil Treasures: Kidmondo Makes It Easy

Mommy needs a lil helper to mark the milestones.

Mommy needs a lil helper to mark the milestones. Have you ever been asked, "When did your baby start crawling? Or eating solids?" only to blush and reply, "Ummm. . . I think at six months and maybe around three months?"

While I wish my memory was crystal clear, my wee one's milestones have flown by me in a blur. Thankfully I have been a shutter bug capturing her every move since her birth, which has helped me estimate a time-line. I wish I had known about Kidmondo when I was pregnant — I could have logged everything in one place.
