BabySugar Diaries: Battle of the High-Back Booster Seats

High Back Booster Seat Reviews

With my baby's first birthday on the horizon and a preschooler who is quickly growing too tall for his car seat, I am suddenly finding myself in the market for a seat that can accommodate my older tot. Following the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's recent review of high-back booster seats, I headed down to my local baby store to test out some of the seats that received the organization's "best" and "good" bets. Along the way, I learned a bit about lap and shoulder belt positioning, ensuring that the seats we tried allowed the lap belt to lay flat across my son's upper thigh and the shoulder belt to rest at the mid-shoulder position. Check out my findings and tell me if you agree!

Graco Recalls 1.5 Million Strollers, Dorel Asia 635,000 Cribs

If you're beginning to feel like nothing's safe anymore, you may be right.

If you're beginning to feel like nothing's safe anymore, you may be right. Following the largest stroller and crib recalls in history last year, the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced two new baby equipment notifications overnight.

The largest of the two is Graco's recall of 1.5 million strollers due to faulty canopy hinges. Similar to Maclaren's recall of 1 million push chairs, Graco announced that children's fingers can be cut when the canopies of their Passage, Alano, and Spree strollers and travel systems are opened or closed. To date, two tots' fingers were cut and five lost their fingertips after getting caught up in the plastic hinges on the identified buggies. The company is offering repair kits to families who own the identified models.

The CPSC also announced the recall of 635,000 Dorel Asia cribs following the death of a 6-month-old child and injuries to 10 more. Similar to the Stork Craft issue last year, the drop sides of 20 affected models can detach, creating enough space for wee ones to become stuck and suffocate.

Have all of the recent recalls shaken you confidence in baby equipment?

Celebaby Style: David Banda

Little David Banda is not a baby anymore.

Little David Banda is not a baby anymore. The darling boy showed just how grown up he is as he pushed a stroller through a grassy NYC park. Perhaps he was trying to show older siblings Lourdes and Rocco that he's big enough to take care of a wee one, too. Although, he may want to work on the doll's positioning as her feet are straight up in the air!

You'd never know this kiddo isn't a native New Yorker. The tot was outfitted to perfection in his Yankees hat, camouflage shorts, orange tank and Quiksilver flip-flops.

Mommy Alert: Graco Infant Snug Ride Voluntary Recall

It's hard to believe that one of the most popular infant car seats that was rated Consumer Report's Best Buy, has announced a voluntary recall of its Graco 2007 Stand Alone Infant Snug Ride ($69–$89).

It's hard to believe that one of the most popular infant car seats that was rated Consumer Report's Best Buy, has announced a voluntary recall of its Graco 2007 Stand Alone Infant Snug Ride ($69–$89). According to their site:

"Graco has determined that the backing of the seat pad on certain stand-alone SnugRide infant car seats manufactured in the United States, may be prone to deterioration or tearing, especially after washing. If this occurs, children occupying the car seat may be able to remove the padding material from the back of the seat pad and place it in their mouths, posing a potential choking hazard.

This notice does not affect SnugRide car seats sold with a stroller as part of a Travel System.

This issue does not affect the ability of the child restraint system to protect the occupant in the event of a motor vehicle crash."

Check your seat and see if you need to order the replacement parts. This is for seats sold between Aug. 1, 2006 through Jun. 30, 2007. Luckily, no injuries have been reported. Thanks for the heads up, Graco!
