BabyNes Bottle Feeding System: Ga Ga or Gag?

The pods are coming!

The pods are coming! Pretty soon you may be brewing up baby's bottle the same way you brew your cup of morning joe. Earlier today, Nestlé introduced a baby milk capsule system, using the same mechanics as the popular Nespresso coffeemakers.

The high-tech BabyNes machine ($287) works with a range of six single-serving formula pods (purchased separately in packs of 26 for $56-$64) to perfectly fill a bottle with the proper portion of milk (at the right temperature) in under a minute. According to Nestlé, the "nutrition system," which the company has been working on for six years, provides a hygienic and convenient way to prepare lil ones' bottles. Made for tots up to three years old, the BabyNes formula pods include four formulations for infants and two for toddlers – the difference being the proteins, calories, and micronutrients in the capsules.

Currently only available in Switzerland, would you want to see the BabyNes make its way to the US?

Which Water Do You Use For Formula?

New moms have it hard — there's so much to think about, and not enough hours in the day!

New moms have it hard — there's so much to think about, and not enough hours in the day! Even after deciding whether breastfeeding or formula feeding is right for you, some moms have another choice to make: which type of water to use to mix powdered formula?

Of course, mama wants to make the best decision, but the answer isn't all that simple. There are unknown safety concerns (like the radiation fallout the poor moms are dealing with in Japan), the possibility of too much fluoride, and whether or not you need to filter or boil it. Bottled water, on the other hand, may not have enough fluoride for your baby, or may be just too expensive. And then there's the pricier option: buying water especially made for baby!

Whether you run the tap or buy, which type of water did you and your doctor decide was best for your baby?

Australian Midwife Pushes For Formula by Prescription

How far would you go to feed your baby formula?

How far would you go to feed your baby formula? Formula feeding, though pricey, is as easy as popping open a can or scooping out some powder, but some breastfeeding advocates want to make it more difficult by requiring moms to get a prescription for the liquid gold.

An Australian doctor of midwifery, who now has the support of the Australian Breastfeeding Association, is asking stores to remove formula from their shelves and place it behind the pharmacy counter so parents have to speak to their pediatricians before purchasing it for their tots. According to Dr. Jennifer James:

It's about looking at ways of ensuring that women get the support and the education they need when they need it. Having to get some sort of prescription ... then the woman is sitting with a health professional who can go through her breastfeeding problems and set up a plan of action to help her achieve her goal of successfully breastfeeding her baby.

Have You Taste Tested Formula?

"It's like Coke vs. Pepsi."

"It's like Coke vs. Pepsi." That's how my son's pediatrician explained the differences between leading baby formula brands when I decided to wean my tot. With ingredient lists that look the same and ads claiming that the two have similar benefits, it was a virtual toss up when I stood in the baby food aisle at my local drugstore. In the end, I went with the one I had a coupon for and the rest, as the say, is history.

While the $3 off coupon sealed the deal for me, other mamas take a more scientific approach to choosing their lil one's new source of nutrition. A weaning mama recently told me that she is in the process of conducting a taste test to determine which tastes most like the breast milk her wee one is used to drinking. Fifty-four percent of LilSugar readers told us they tasted their own breast milk. Can the same be said for formula?

Infant Formula Is the Real Liquid Gold at One Dollar an Ounce

When people say that breastfeeding saves money, they're talking dollars not cents.

When people say that breastfeeding saves money, they're talking dollars not cents. Since the milk is manufactured by a mother's body, nursing a newborn is nutritious and free. Though breast milk is called liquid gold, it seems like it'd be a more appropriate term for formula once you run the figures on popular brands. On average, one ounce of the powder (which makes two ounces of fluid) costs about a buck with organic and conventional formulas at similar price points. Check out these numbers.

  • Similac Advance w/ Early Shield Powder Formula — 23.2 oz. ($22.49) = $0.97 per ounce
  • Enfamil Premium Powder — 23.4 oz ($24.99) = $1.06 per ounce
  • Earth's Best Milk Based Formula Organic Infant Formula Dairy w/DHA — 25.75 oz ($27.99) = $1.08 per ounce
  • Good Start Gentle Plus Powder — 25.7 oz ($26.49) = $1.03 per ounce
  • Bright Beginnings Milk-Based Organic Infant Formula — 25.75 can ($24.99) = $0.97 per ounce
  • Vermont Organics DHA Soy Based Organic Infant Formula — 25.7 oz can ($24.99) = $0.97 per ounce

New Study Says Fortified Formulas Make Smart Babies

Formula advocates have new evidence to support their beliefs.

Formula advocates have new evidence to support their beliefs. A new study in the journal of Child Development finds that infants receiving formula fortified with DHA have higher IQs and vocabulary development later in childhood than those who don't. DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid that appears naturally in breast milk, is thought to speed the brain's processing abilities.

The researchers behind the study took more than 200 9-month-old babies who had all been on formula for various amounts of time through a number of exercises involving blankets and rattles. The wee ones who received formula fortified with DHA scored significantly higher than those drinking unfortified versions of the formula. According to the study, those who received the DHA-enhanced formula from birth scored better than those that were weaned off of breast milk at 6-weeks-old.

Doctors and breastfeeding advocates fear that the new study does not address the additional benefits of breast milk and may sway new mamas to forgo nursing in favor of these fortified formulas. Do you believe this latest study and the hype behind it?
