Storybook Masks Bring Books to Life

There's a reason classic storybooks continue to resonate with lil ones.

There's a reason classic storybooks continue to resonate with lil ones. The sweet tales, with their fun characters, colorful story lines and ultimate morals, have educated generations of tots.

Getting tykes interested in the classic characters can be a tough sell. Given all of the products associated with the movies, television and video games they watch, it can be hard to convince a wee one to follow a classic tale like Goldilocks. With EQD's storybook mask sets ($12), traditional books and songs come alive. Each set includes four or five foam masks that can be used to act out the traditional tales or sing along to the nursery rhymes. Perfect for dress-up, impromptu plays and even classroom story times, the sets include such beloved stories as Cinderella, Three Little Pigs and The Ugly Duckling.

Fancy Pants Kids Keeps Lil Imaginations Churning

Costumes aren't just for Halloween.

Costumes aren't just for Halloween. Parents know that dressing up is a favorite activity of toddlers and preschoolers alike, inspiring creative imaginary play.

Trying to fill a dress-up trunk with gender-neutral costumes that your tot and playdate friends are willing to put on can be a challenge. Most costumes found during Halloween season, tend to fall into traditional gender categories or have Hollywood-themed characters attached to them. Fancy Pants Kids, a Canada-based costume company, is out to change that. Their beautifully-made costumes are the handiwork of a former stage manager who creates designs that inspire afternoons filled with dramatic play. From dragon tails ($48) and crowns ($12) to superhero capes ($25) and pointy-eared headbands ($22), the pieces are made to last well-beyond the next costume holiday.

Daughter Plays Rachel Zoe to Mama

Some time after my daughter turned two, she started caring about clothing.

Some time after my daughter turned two, she started caring about clothing. After realizing she could choose her own wardrobe, my mini Rachel Zoe started offering me her fashion advice. Fancying party dresses for herself, it is no surprise that she prefers I wear skirts or dresses with sparkly ballet style flats.

In a hurry to get out of the house the other day, I caved to her demands and dressed in an ensemble she selected for me. Looking a bit like fairies, we set out to the grocery and picked up a few items before we fluttered back home and the pixie dust wore off and turned us back into a pair of pumpkins. I was a bit embarrassed at first, but after seeing the smile on her face after I put on the outfit — I'm likely to play dress up again.

Lil Tip: Dressing Up in Scrubs

Since I've been spending my fair share of time in doctor's offices lately, I've picked up a few parenting tips.

Since I've been spending my fair share of time in doctor's offices lately, I've picked up a few parenting tips. The other day, I saw a cute little girl walk into the pediatrician's waiting room all dressed up in scrubs. As she chatted with my wee one, I was able to ask her mother about her daughter's ensemble.

Like many youngsters, her daughter hated visiting the doctor for fear of shots. To help her overcome her fear, the smart mama bought the girl some scrubs of her own. Now when she has an appointment, she gets to play doctor with the pros and has a sense of camaraderie with them instead of animosity.

And, they make great pajamas or costumes for the Halloween holiday.

Kidoodles: Crown Jewels for Your Lil Gem

Mothers the world over call their children prince and princess as a term of endearment and entitlement.

Mothers the world over call their children prince and princess as a term of endearment and entitlement. While the toy stores and costume shops are filled with plastic versions, why not give your child the chance to play their royal part with a beautiful, handmade crown from My Cakies?

These adorable, retro-looking crowns ($35) are made of 100% wool felt and wool felt blend with vintage buttons used to decorate the six designs. Tot friendly for birthday celebrations or everyday dress-up, the cotton-covered elastic back of each crown means that your child can grow from Prince to King.

Dressing Up's More Than Wearing Mama's Heels

As a child, there's nothing more fun than wobbling around in your mother's high heels.

As a child, there's nothing more fun than wobbling around in your mother's high heels. A recent Parenting article talked about the reasons children start to role play around two-years-old. And it mentioned the developmental changes that occur at that stage — kids notice changes in appearance, understand symbols and that they can pretend to be someone.

The piece also cited benefits of imaginary play. It said:

"Dressing up's also a crucial way for them to try new roles, rehearse real-life situations, and develop empathy—something they'll continue to do through imaginative play in the years to come. "Kids literally get to walk in other people’s shoes," says Linn. (So don’t freak out if your son is sporting a tiara or your little girl a necktie—it's normal for them to be curious about both genders.)"

Are "Couples" Halloween Costumes Cute or Corny?

As a child, I was very into Halloween.

As a child, I was very into Halloween. So even now, I still get myself to a bar or party every Halloween, and I always dress up.

Some couples go their separate ways when dressing for Halloween, while other mates opt for couples Halloween costumes. If I happen to be with someone when Oct. 31 rolls around, I make it a point to plan our costumes so they match. One year, I was a bee and my boyfriend was a beekeeper (aww). What do you think: Is dressing up with your significant other cute or corny? Please share in the comments.
