Are Moms Skimping on the Diaper Changes These Days?

Check the language on any package of disposable diapers and you're sure to see some boast about the nappy's absorbency.

Check the language on any package of disposable diapers and you're sure to see some boast about the nappy's absorbency. All diaper manufacturers love to discuss how much their products can hold, and it seems that moms are tuning in to their claims.

Every time my own mother or MIL come to visit, the first thing they want to do is change my tot's diaper. They love to tell me how they are amazed by the efficiency of today's disposable diapers compared to the versions they used. So I found a recent report in Consumer Reports about a decline in diaper sales rather interesting.

They linked the decline in nappy sales and a rise in diaper cream sales to the fact that mamas are changing their lil ones' soiled nappies less frequently than before, ultimately leading to more diaper rashes. There's no telling if it is the bad economy that is pushing moms to hold off on the changes or if it is the better absorbency of the diapers, but it is an interesting correlation. What do you think?

Huggies

Huggies Hopes to Take the Squirm Out of the Diaper Change Experience

Could the days of squirmy diaper changes be a thing of the past?

Could the days of squirmy diaper changes be a thing of the past? Moms have tried virtually everything – from straightjacket-like contraptions to virtual gymnastics – to keep mobile tots in place when changing a soiled nappy. Now Huggies is coming to the rescue. The company plans to introduce Little Movers Slip-On Diapers next month, a new line of disposable diapers that slide on like a Pull-Up, but are removed like a traditional diaper thanks to stretch sides with special finger tabs.

Calling it a "catch, slip on, and release" experience, the new diapers will facilitate changes both standing up and laying down, which as any mom of a mobile tot knows varies from day-to-day. Will you be buying the diapers?

OnSugar Blog: Questionable Behavior

Lots of moms like to think out loud and Jo Aaron is one of them.

Lots of moms like to think out loud and Jo Aaron is one of them. In her latest post to Mommy Brain, she asks her readers for some advice.

It's been quite a few weeks since I've had a chance to write. I've had the normal "busy stuff" going on that causes me to tell people when they ask how I'm doing, "I'm just super busy these days".

But there is some fun stuff I've been dealing with that I'm going to ask you to help me out with.

My son is an adorable, wonderful, happy, sweet, loving child who has recently developed the lovely habit of kicking his legs like the Lord of the Dance when I try to put anything on his lower body, i.e. a clean diaper, pants, a Pull-Up, big boy underwear (that I just wanted him to feel how soft they were against his cute little tushie), socks, shoes...

And of course, once I do manage to wrestle these things onto his body, it can be an even bigger struggle to get them off.

This issue has literally become a huge pain...no, literally, it's painful to get beaten by cute little legs a few times a day. So instead of starting a charity foundation for battered mommies, I'm asking you, my fellow parents, for any suggestions.

To be fair, I'll list the things I've tried thus far...

  • Not yelling and keeping my voice soft and calm as I try to reason with him.
  • Not yelling, but bribing him with anything I can think of that he likes...the kid could own the Disney Cars franchise at this point.
  • Yelling. He laughed at me.
  • Holding him down with my legs over his arms on the floor while he kicked his crazy wild legs. Didn't work and I felt all kinds of wrong doing it.
  • Having my husband do it. He got kicked. He was pissed.
  • Talking like Elmo. It worked once. The next day he was over it.

So if you love me, even if you just like me a little bit, you'll offer me some advice. I promise to try everything at least once, so I'm not just being the annoying friend who begs for your help and then ignores everything you've said. I even promise to write an entire post dedicated to the suggestion that works for me...or give you my first born (he's all yours!)

Bethenny Frankel

Bethenny Frankel Changes Baby Bryn on the Bathroom Floor

Necessity is indeed the mother of invention.

Necessity is indeed the mother of invention. On last night's episode of Bethenny Ever After the new mama took a break from her meal to change baby Bryn's diaper in a restaurant's tiny restroom. With no changing table available, she covered the floor with her changing pad and went to work, only to wonder how she was supposed to use the bathroom while holding her tot.

The scene was eerily reminiscent of my first meal out with my lil one. I confidently strode into the restroom with my baby and diaper bag in tow, only to find the requisite pull-down table missing. I balked at putting my infant on the dirty floor (even if it was covered) and tried to come up with a different method. I managed to balance my son and his changing pad on my lap while sitting on the toilet, only to wonder how I was supposed to then use the facility myself. Let's just say it took a lot of coordination! Now, I'm sure to check out the Sit or Squat app before entering a restaurant with my kids. What was your toughest diaper change environment?

Baby Bubadoo Changing Wrap: Kid Friendly or Are You Kidding?

Changing a squirmy tot's diaper can be more complicated than assembling the changing table you're using for the task.

Changing a squirmy tot's diaper can be more complicated than assembling the changing table you're using for the task. As lil ones begin to discover the world around them, they can make the duty impossible – refusing to lie down, reaching for body parts that need to be cleaned, and twisting and turning every which way. While some mamas move their diaper changes to the floor, others turn to the Baby Bubadoo Changing Wrap ($15). The water-resistant wrap's swaddle-like design secures around baby's shoulders and arms to keep hands out of the way for an event-free diaper changing session. What do you think of the tool?
