Suzanne Olvey of Fanciful Events is a master at throwing gorgeous girlie parties. (Just check out this Sleeping Beauty bash she created for her oldest daughter.) So we weren't surprised when she sent us another jaw-dropper: a pastel carousel-inspired party she dreamed up for her youngest daughter, Adriana.

The amount of detail in this event (beautifully photographed by Renee Nicole) was almost overwhelming, with gorgeous backdrops and table coverings, the sweetest desserts, and tons of thoughtful carousel-themed extras, but it was the custom-created birthday girl chalkboard from Etsy's Moulage Collection that really put us over the edge. Featuring all of Adriana's favorite things (including carousels, of course), it added a modern twist to this pastel party, and we're totally stealing the idea for our own kids! I first became a fan of Ikea's Ung Drill Frame when I was searching for a photo prop for my wedding last August. Ornate, affordable, and very lightweight, I decided to paint the frame a pale peach and convert it into a chalkboard sign for guests to write messages on and hold in the photo booth. Splash some color on the writing wall! Chalkboard walls have been a trend in tots' rooms for a few years, but lots of moms long for a better option than the standard blackboard. Hudson Paint's 100 percent acrylic chalkboard paints are available in a rainbow of 24 vibrant colors, adding some life and drawing space to the walls. Each quart of the low-odor paint ($25 each) is designed to cover 90 to 100 square feet, and only requires two to three hours of drying time between coats (a minimum of two coats is recommended). Like other erasable wall options, the added scribble space gives budding artists and everyday doodlers a set area to explore their creativity and leave their mark – be it on an entire wall like Apple and Moses Martin's room has, or on a smaller sliver (think back of a door).

It's back-to-school season, and even if you haven't been a student in ages, now is the ideal time to get out the chalk. From chalkboard paint to write-on vases, chalk-worthy surfaces are showing up on all sorts of home accents for both kids' rooms and adult decor.

Not only do I love the retro schoolhouse vibe of these products, but they are also a practical way to write yourself reminders, label (and re-label) boxes, or just keep the kids occupied.
