Mother's Milk: Send Your Surplus to the Bank

Take your milk all the way to the bank!

Take your milk all the way to the bank! A study in this week's journal of Pediatrics found that close to 900 babies' lives would be saved each year if 90 percent of American women nursed their newborns for the first six months. For new mamas who want to give their tots all of the benefits of breast milk, but who cannot do so themselves, breast milk banks can provide the liquid gold at a price.

There are currently 10 breast milk banks throughout North America (with three more forming in Kansas, Massachusetts, and Oregon), and the amount of donations they receive is rapidly growing. According to the director of the Human Milk Banking Association of North America, about 2,000 women donated pumped milk in 2008, but even more may have been given through direct arrangements. Though 63 percent of LilSugar readers said they wouldn't buy breast milk online, many said they would be willing to give their wee one milk from a donor.

If you were capable of producing extra breast milk, would you donate it to a bank?

Mommy Alert! Is Baby Drinking Rocket Fuel?

There is always something in the news that makes a mother cringe or second guess her parenting choices.

There is always something in the news that makes a mother cringe or second guess her parenting choices. The other day I started to read up on a chemical called perchlorate. It is an ingredient used in rocket fuel. Apparently, it can be found in particular formulas as well as tap water sources. The CDC team warned:

Mixing perchlorate-tainted formula powder with tap water containing "even minimal amounts" of the chemical could boost the resulting mixture's toxin content above the "safe" level set by the EPA.

In a frenzy, I googled "perchlorate" and discovered something extraordinary. The toxin is not only found in formula and water, but breastmilk, too! Maybe the fact that it is not mixed with the also contaminated water deems it less toxic than formula but how can we really know? I am still dumbfounded that my body is producing rocket fuel. That explains some feisty behavior around the house.

To learn more about perchlorate and the study, visit EWA. To check your local water system, consult the EPA. If you want to get involved, voice your concerns to the new EPA head Lisa Jackson.

Breast Milk the Not So Secret Ingredient at Swiss Restaurant

The secret ingredient is mother's milk, only it's no secret!

The secret ingredient is mother's milk, only it's no secret! A Swiss restaurateur plans to roll out a new menu with decadent soups, sauces and stews made with breast milk. The owner of Storchen, Hans Locher, does not see any controversy in using the natural ingredient as babies are raised on it. What raised eyebrows is when he started soliciting the services of lactating women. One report said:

Mr Locher attracted the attention of the leading media of the German-speaking world this week after he posted ads looking for women donors, who will receive just over three pounds for 14 ounces of their milk.

The chef said that he blends a bit of cream with the milk for consistency, but only service will show whether or not patrons will indulge. Would you?

Did You Try Your Own Breast Milk?

It is a strange thing that humans drink milk extracted from goats and cows, but not their own homemade dairy products.

It is a strange thing that humans drink milk extracted from goats and cows, but not their own homemade dairy products. I have no interest in consuming fluids that my body emits — even if I willingly give it to my child.

While I was curious to know what my daughter drank exclusively for the first six months of her life, I was not inquisitive enough to actually taste the milk. Many moms are unfettered by the stigma and give it a swig test without hesitation.

America's Next Top Model Contestant Drinks Her Breast Milk

There's long been that myth about models not being the most intelligent, but on this week's America's Next Top Model, a mama's decision making came into question.

There's long been that myth about models not being the most intelligent, but on this week's America's Next Top Model, a mama's decision making came into question. And, it brought a whole new meaning to the term, mother's milk. Claire, a 24-year-old contestant admitted to drinking her own breast milk and likened the taste to a light soy milk.

In the interview snippet that followed, the model explained that she's pumping so her daughter will still be able to nurse when she returns home. I'm not sure if something was lost in translation, but hasn't the catwalker ever heard the term "pump and dump"?

Buying Breast Milk Online: Kid Friendly or Are You Kidding?

Parents tell children not to take candy from strangers, yet they buy breast milk for their babies on the Internet.

Parents tell children not to take candy from strangers, yet they buy breast milk for their babies on the Internet.

Women peddling the liquid gold for up to $4 an ounce plus shipping and handling aren't that hard to find online.

One supplier priced her milk at $2 an ounce in a recent post on Craigslist. It said:

So weird to be offering my breastmilk but i figure if it can help people and make a little extra side money then it's worth it. I am a 31 year old (Chinese if it matters) very healthy/non-smoker/non-drinker. Had our first baby a little over 3 weeks ago and i have been storing bag after bag of breastmilk in the freezer. I save them the in Lansinoh breast milk storage bags. I have no infectious diseases or any kind of health concerns to worry about. I am currently still taking my Prenatal Vitamins and Expecta.

Mamas who want their tots to reap the rewards of breast milk, but can't produce enough and those who have adopted are two types of potential buyers.

Though there are milk banks that regulate milk quality and test donors for viruses, a week's worth of liquid can cost around $700. So some parents surf the web seeking a better deal and trust complete strangers in order to secure the goods.
