Miss Puma Contest For Aspiring Cougars

Too young to be a cougar?

Too young to be a cougar? Too old to be illegal? Well, marketers are carving out a niche for cougars in training, that is women under 40 who like younger men.

There's already a school for aspiring cougars, and now there's a name: pumas. San Francisco will elect its Miss Bay Area Puma on Feb. 18, and I imagine similar contests are being held around the world. All winners will be sent to Jamaica to compete for the title of Miss Puma during International Cougar Week at the end of March.

Who's responsible for all this? It's actually sponsored by the Society of Single Professionals, a nonprofit organization for singles (its website certainly looks nonprofit!), and the Singles Travel Company. Though the cougar trend really only exists in pop culture, they've twisted the cougar-cub phenomena into an empowering movement for women.

"Midlife women are victimized by our youth-oriented society," says Rich Gosse, organizer of International Cougar Week. "They are regarded as 'non-sexy.' Supposedly guys are only attracted to nubile 20-year-olds found in the centerfolds of men's magazines. The truth is that there are many millions of men who find older women attractive. We will prove that during International Cougar Week."

Jennifer Aniston to Play a Puma

For Jennifer Aniston's next role, she'll play a thirtysomething woman who, together with a female friend (possibly played by Elizabeth Banks, whom Aniston wanted for the role last year), makes "a habit of romancing younger men." The two ladies "take a French skiing vacation that challenges their romantic expectations." The title of the movie is Pumas, as, of course, an alternative term to "Cougars."

In an interesting juxtaposition, this news arrives at the same time that we learn of another project about women's sexuality: Diane Keaton's HBO movie about a feminist who starts a sexually explicit magazine for women.

Does "Pumas" just have a nicer ring to it than "Cougars?" And as we also prepare for ABC's upcoming series Cougar Town (starring Aniston's Friends friend, Courteney Cox), is the whole "Cougar" concept getting a teensy bit tired? Do you think either (or both) of these projects (Pumas, Keaton's HBO movie) is empowering?

Pumas Put Pep in a Busy Mama's Step

For mums on the run who put in hours at the office before they shuttle kids to soccer practice, Puma offers a collection of comfortable shoes that lighten their load.

For mums on the run who put in hours at the office before they shuttle kids to soccer practice, Puma offers a collection of comfortable shoes that lighten their load. I keep a pair of their cushy Ginza Sneakers ($70) in the trunk of my car so I can kick off my heels and slip into shoes that are fit for carting my tots around the mall or lugging groceries once I'm off work. Sold in fashionable colors, the sleek sneakers look more like sporty flats than athletic shoes. Expectant women find them easy on the eyes and soft on the feet.

What Are the Best Baby Shoes?

As if they aren't cute enough, babies also get the best footwear.

As if they aren't cute enough, babies also get the best footwear. When it comes to covering your lil walker's toes, what type of shoes do you choose?

Soft slippered Robeez, sandal like Crocs, old school Converse, PediPeds to keep up with celebs, Pumas to run in, cub foot bottomed Pazitos, or See Kai Run for more advanced walkers.

With so many brands and styles to choose from, which pair does your lil one wear?

Pumas Are Made for Lil Walkers

When it's time to go shopping for your lil one's first pair of shoes, it's good to take baby steps.

When it's time to go shopping for your lil one's first pair of shoes, it's good to take baby steps. Between my two kids, I've purchased my share of pairs, and many of them barely got their soles dirty.

While the classic white walker is the thing bronzed baby shoes are made of, putting them on your child can prove to be cumbersome. And, many of the better brands can set you back $50–$100 for footwear that isn't exactly fashion forward.

Then, there are the Velcro walkers which are quickly slipped on to your child's feet and just as easily taken off. Unless you're up for daily scavenger hunts, these probably aren't the shoes for you.

While there are a lot of brands and styles to choose from, I've found Puma Light Flights are a staple when it comes to kid-friendly kicks. The design keeps kids light on their feet and the rounded toe keeps them from stumbling.

Available in a great array of colors for boys and girls, the shoes also provide good support and have flexible soles, which are important for developing feet. Priced reasonably at $35 a pop, you'll get your money's worth before your child outgrows them.
