French furnishings and accessories company Pierre Deux closed all 23 of its stores nationwide last week after filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection. The brand isn't the hottest retailer on the map, but it has long been the go-to purveyor of French country style in the States. The company's first shop was first opened by founders Pierre Le Vec and Pierre Moulin in Greenwich Village in 1967, selling imported French antiques and signature curtains, pillows, and fabrics.
Pierre Deux's table linens were, and continue to be, a staple in many homes that I spent time in growing up (albeit WASP-y ones). For a time, the brand's quilted tote bags were a major trend in my town; we used to carry our sneakers and workout gear in them to the gym. There is an element of "granny" style to this look, but so long as you don't overdo it, I think Pierre Deux's vivid colors and delicate patterns can make a lovely accent. Pierre Deux may have lost its steam over the year, but it's still sad to see a brand so quintessential to French country style fall by the wayside. Au revoir! Bonne chance.
