In Italy, Obama Daughters Dabble in Gelato-Making

Meet Malia and Sasha Obama, first children — and future gelato makers?

Meet Malia and Sasha Obama, first children — and future gelato makers? While President Obama was in Rome, Italy, for a G-8 summit, the US embassy contacted the Italian capital's most renowned gelato parlor, Giolitti, to arrange an insider's ice cream tour for the commander in chief's daughters. At the historic gelateria, Malia, 11, and Sasha, 8, donned aprons to become frozen-dessert makers for the afternoon. The sisters, accompanied by their grandmother, made blackberry and banana gelato. According to parlor owner Nazareno Giolitti, "Right after they made gelato, they tasted it straight from the machine, and the youngest one said, "It really tastes like blackberries." The girls, who Giolitti said "ate with great gusto," left with a whopping 6.6 pounds each of their ice cream, and took some home for the first lady.

Giolitti later showed a local television station a tub of some of the blackberry flavor the Obama girls created, saying that the leftover ice cream was immediately picked up by customers who wanted their cones filled with it. If I were him, I would have sold it for a killing on eBay.

Are you as envious as I am that the Obama girls had the opportunity of a lifetime at Rome's most famous gelateria?

Bo Hits a South Lawn Luau . . . But Needs This

We wouldn't leave our pets out of a family party in the backyard and the same is true for the first family including Bo in some fun.

We wouldn't leave our pets out of a family party in the backyard and the same is true for the first family including Bo in some fun. Michelle (and Malia) walk their Portuguese Water Dog down to the South Lawn to attend a luau hosted by President Barack Obama for members of Congress and their families yesterday. I think I see a wagging tail!

Hopefully the event includes dog-safe snacks, and I'm glad to see the girls' hibiscus leis far from Bo's mouth as that's a plant toxic to dogs! What I don't see is any Hawaiian print on the pooch. Sad. Granted his curly hair makes it impossible to spot the collar but I've picked out some print ideas for another big bash. Hey, and maybe next time the first family travels to Hawaii they'll hit up my favorite Cocojor shop for a doggie shirt, too?

Is It OK to Use a Child to Promote a Beauty Brand?

A beauty brand — I won't name names because they don't need the publicity, but this story has more information — is hoping to build buzz by using Malia Obama's upcoming birthday as a PR stunt.

A beauty brand — I won't name names because they don't need the publicity, but this story has more information — is hoping to build buzz by using Malia Obama's upcoming birthday as a PR stunt. They're sending her a $350 basket filled with beauty goods, selling the basket online, and encouraging shoppers to digitally "sign" a birthday card for her. This brand didn't get permission to mention Malia in this pitch, and I find the whole thing pretty tacky. Do you agree that the first daughter should be off limits for companies, or is there a reasonable explanation for this?

Who's in Charge of the Pets: Mom or Kids?

Just about every kid wants a pet during their childhood and begging and pleading generally play a role in acquiring animals.

Just about every kid wants a pet during their childhood and begging and pleading generally play a role in acquiring animals. As a bargaining tool, children tend to promise to care for the furry friend — feeding, bathing and walking the newest family member.

First Lady Michelle Obama fell victim to such empty pledges from her two daughters, Sasha and Malia. She recently sold them out:

I got up at 5:15 a.m. in the morning to walk my puppy... Even though the kids are supposed to do a lot of the work, I'm still up at 5:15 a.m. taking my dog out. So for everyone who has a child asking for a puppy — you have to want the dog, as I do. I love my Bo.

Do your kids pull their weight with the furry friends?

Fergie Rocks and Rolls at the White House

Lots of our favorite celebs were out celebrating Easter yesterday, including Fergie who was in DC making the White House party a little more festive.

Lots of our favorite celebs were out celebrating Easter yesterday, including Fergie who was in DC making the White House party a little more festive. The singer performed the national anthem and a few of her singles at the annual Easter Egg Roll, with the whole Obama family watching by her side. Fergie got a big hug from the president and said the whole experience was "one of the most amazing moments of my life." Between their new puppy Bo and a special visit from Fergie, it sounds like the first Easter in DC was one to remember for Sasha, Malia, Barack, and Michelle.

The Obama Girls Get Their Puppy!

There will be paws padding around the White House soon!

There will be paws padding around the White House soon! According to recent reports, Malia and Sasha Obama will be the proud owners of a six-month-old Portuguese Water Dog named Bo. Initially, the first family was going to adopt a rescue animal, but ended up with this pup that was returned to its breeder. The newest resident of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue is supposed to make its official debut this Tuesday.

While there's nothing cuter than the bonds between children and their critters, the Obama girls are mature enough to help raise the animal. Does your family have a pet or are you waiting until your kids are of a certain age?

Simple or Swank: The Obama Girls' New Swing Set

Swing sets have come a long way from the old tire hanging from a tree branch.

Swing sets have come a long way from the old tire hanging from a tree branch. Yesterday, Malia and Sasha Obama came home from school to see just how far they have come. While not necessarily the most extravagant swing set, their parents surprised them with a deluxe addition that would leave most tots jumping for joy!
Simple: The Rainbow All-American Double Decker ($1,700) is made expressly for Costco and includes two forts, three swings, a picnic table, sandbox, rock wall, ship's wheel, telescope, and climbing rope. Made of all-American timber, the set is sure to last for many years of outdoor play.

Swank: While you might not be able to buy an exact replica of the Obama girls' new play structure (it is etched with the names of all 44 presidents and has a plaque stating, "Malia and Sasha's castle handcrafted with pride in the heartland of America . . . God bless America"), the Rainbow Castle Package 4 ($3,500) is made from cedar and North American Redwood and comes with a tire swing, four swings, monkey bars, trapeze rings, a slide, fort, climbing wall, rope ladder, picnic table, and climbing ropes.

Sasha and Malia Are Swing Set

Yesterday Sasha and Malia came home to find a fancy new swing set just outside dad's Oval Office.

Yesterday Sasha and Malia came home to find a fancy new swing set just outside dad's Oval Office. They "squealed with delight," when they saw it, "for almost an hour."

The bling set includes a picnic table with brass plates, etched with the names of the 44 US presidents. But the Chicago Tribune wants us to know the Obamas did not make the most lavish choice. While it includes four swings, a slide, a fort, and a climbing wall, it lacks the spiral sides, roomy lofts, and towering tents other, more decadent, sets boast.

I'd be excited if it was one swing tied from a tree (fine, that was me). I'm just waiting for pictures of the girls playing through the long afternoons daylight savings this weekend (you're welcome) will bring.

Lighten Up! Obama Talks Jonas Brothers in Uncovered Video

Today Barack Obama might be all serious while trying to fix the dismal economy, but in this behind-the-scenes video taken this Summer he's just a teasing dad talking about his daughter's love for the Jonas Brothers.

Today Barack Obama might be all serious while trying to fix the dismal economy, but in this behind-the-scenes video taken this Summer he's just a teasing dad talking about his daughter's love for the Jonas Brothers. During the DNC, Barack bet Malia $5 that she would stammer and have nothing to say when she met Nick Jonas. Watch the adorable clip, which includes some dance moves by the now president. I'm still wondering: Who won the bet?!
