Steer Clear of Temptation

Jillian Michaels Covers Plenty of Topics With LHJ

I predict that 2010 will be the year Jillian Michaels becomes a household name, if she isn't already.

I predict that 2010 will be the year Jillian Michaels becomes a household name, if she isn't already. The latest season of The Biggest Loser begins on Jan. 5 (that's tomorrow in case you hope to catch the season premiere) and her new one woman lifestyle makeover reality show will premiere later this Spring. Master trainer Jillian opened up to Ladies' Home Journal about love, life, and the dangers of reality weight loss TV. Here are the highlights.

  • On the manipulative side of reality TV: "The Biggest Loser is like a funhouse mirror. I’ve loved the show and the platform it has given me, but still, it is the nature of reality TV to manipulate. You never see what’s going on in its entirety. For every 10 minutes we’re on the show, acting like insane people, there are a hundred hours of training you don’t see. The stretching, the icing. Nobody wants to watch that."

Nicole Kidman

Ladies' Home Journal: The New Nicole Kidman Is a Woman's Woman

Oscar and Golden Globe-winning actress, producer, and vocalist are just a few things Nicole Kidman can rattle off from her long list of accomplishments.

Oscar and Golden Globe-winning actress, producer, and vocalist are just a few things Nicole Kidman can rattle off from her long list of accomplishments. But the role the gorgeous red head relishes most is being a mother and wife in her new hometown of Nashville. As country crooner Keith Urban's partner, she is happy to sit back for a bit and let the spotlight shine brightly on him while she spends the majority of her time raising their young daughter, Sunday. The 42-year-old mother recently took time to sit down with Ladies' Home Journal where she talked about her content lifestyle and her desire to give back to the community.

On living in Nashville:

I love living here. . . . It's a long way from New York and Los Angeles, but that's part of the attraction. I feel protected here, especially now that I have the baby. . . . There are certain limitations to my career because I'm based here. And that's cool. Keith has enormous ambitions, which I support. His tours and albums are much bigger than what I'm doing right now.

On how she cherishes her new life:

I was running from my life, in a way. . . . My imaginary life was better than my flesh-and-blood life. That's a sad thing to say, but it was. Now I love my real life so much it requires an enormous belief in a film to want to take it on. . . . I think that we're in the world to connect. Because that's what you're left with. You're not left with your houses or awards or money, you're left with the people that you built relationships with.

On UNIFEM, a charity she has worked with for years:

It's so they'll [battered women] have a place to call. A lot of women are so terrified; they'll go to the police or court and don't win. We can set up shelters and raise money. . . . I'm constantly trying to find new ways to give back. . . . Women are nurturers. There's so much we can do with the power of our feelings, the power of our sensitivity.

Jon and Kate Plus 8 Talk About the State of Their Marriage

We know that Jon and Kate Plus 8 is currently filming its fifth season, so it's no surprise that our favorite tensome is on the cover of May's Ladies' Home Journal.

We know that Jon and Kate Plus 8 is currently filming its fifth season, so it's no surprise that our favorite tensome is on the cover of May's Ladies' Home Journal. Decked out in all-white attire, the Gosselin family looks set for Spring and Summer, but inside John and Kate set the record straight on the state of their marriage. Check out the highlights of what the couple said:

Jon on marriage: "This struggle has definitely put some tension in our marriage. But I never cheated on Kate. Kate and I are together."

Kate on privacy: "The fact that we are recognized, screamed at, mobbed and so often approached when we're together does make life difficult."

Kate about fame: "I don't get it. I'm just a mom who's doing her best, not unlike moms everywhere. I just happen to have a few more kids than the average."

Jon joking about the life he imagined versus reality: "I always thought I'd be, like, 54 years old and marry a 19-year-old or something."

Jon on being a reality star: "I can't be Jon, I have to be Jon and Kate Plus 8, which is a really hard thing for me."

On the Newsstand: Barack and Michelle Open Up to the Ladies

Barack and Michelle Obama sat down with Ladies' Home Journal to talk about marriage, parenting, women voters, and what it's like to run for President of the United States.

Barack and Michelle Obama sat down with Ladies' Home Journal to talk about marriage, parenting, women voters, and what it's like to run for President of the United States.

I have to admit, I love getting a behind the scenes look into how busy politicians try to maintain some remnants of normalcy. Stay tuned for a peek into the McCains' marriage, as LHJ plans on sitting down with John and Cindy, too. The Obama interview will be the cover story for the September issue of the magazine.

Here are some highlights:

  • On Michelle becoming a part of his administration:
Barack: "She is my chief counsel and adviser. I would never make big decisions without asking her opinion. Certainly about my career and my life. My sense is—and I’ll let her speak for herself here—that she’d probably be more interested in having a set of projects that were driven by her interests and her desires, as opposed to me handing her some sort of portfolio, and saying, 'Here, do this.'"
  • Michelle: "There are a ton of issues that I care deeply about. But the notion of sitting around the table with a set of policy advisers—no offense — makes me yawn [laughter]. . . . I’d love to be having more conversations with military spouses."
  • On marital problems:
Michelle: "There were a lot of things time-wise that he couldn’t provide because he was not there. So, how do I stop being mad at him and start problem solving, and cobble together the resources? I also had to admit that I needed space and I needed time."
