One of the most amazing parts of motherhood is watching the bond that develops between your children. Siblings share a special relationship unlike any other, so it's essential to emphasize that from the get-go. I can still remember the excitement of taking a "Big Sister" class at the hospital where my brother was born . . . and that was more than 26 years ago.

If you're expecting a second lil one, consider a creative way to introduce your child to the family's newest addition. Here, some tried and true methods for ensuring that the initial meet and greet is a smooth, successful, and special one.

If there were still any doubts that Olive Cohen is getting a sibling, they were put to rest yesterday. Mama Isla Fisher and the tot were spotted carrying some new books, including Joanna Cole's popular, I'm a Big Sister ($7) while out in LA. Though the newly married actress has yet to confirm her pregnancy, she seems to be getting the future big sister ready for a brother or sister.

The addition of subsequent babies to a family can be quite a shock for tots who are used to being the center of their parents' attention. Before the anticipated lil one arrives, check out these tips for preparing your existing offspring for their new siblings:

Family Ties: Introducing the Siblings

Thrilled for the birth of their second child, many parents are also fearful of how their first born will react.

Thrilled for the birth of their second child, many parents are also fearful of how their first born will react. I tried to prepare my daughter for her sibling's arrival with books, baby dolls, and grand stories, but only time would tell how she would handle the new addition.

After my son was born, my husband went home and picked up our now "big" girl and brought her back to the hospital. As planned, the two of them went to the nursery to "pick him out" from behind a glass window. They brought him back to the room and we gave her a few gifts from her little brother. She put on her fresh "big sister" tee and devoured the chocolate frosted cupcake like a queen bee. Being a big sister wasn't so bad. Since then, she has continued to love up on her lil brother and only occasionally asking me to put him in the swing so we can hang out alone. I have a feeling the rivalry will kick in when the wee one starts to eat chocolate.

Big Sister Books

Friends keep asking if my daughter knows that she is getting a sibling. My answer to that is, "Sort of." She can nod her head when asked if there's a baby growing in mommy's tummy, but I don't think she understands that life is actually developing.

In an effort not to totally rock her world, we have given her a baby doll, moved her to the big girl bed relinquishing the crib for "baby" and read countless big sister books. Of all the ones on the market, I like these the best mostly because they fit into a series of books that she already enjoys so much.

Whether your older child is having a hard time adjusting or unhappy about having to share the limelight, get them excited about the impending birth by posting a "countdown to delivery" calendar.

And, purchase and wrap a present that the baby can give the older child when they meet at the hospital.
