This week, we are planning an heirloom-themed party that asks guests to pass on stories, advice, and heirloom gifts instead of filling a nursery with new goodies.

The aim of the shower is to keep costs down and celebrate cherished motherhood and childhood moments, so there's no need to create a fancy favor. If you opt to put Rice Krispie Treats on Popsicle sticks on the shower menu, consider making extras as favors. Because Rice Krispie Treats don't require any baking, the whole project of making the treats, cutting, and sticking in a stick should take less than 15 minutes. I wrapped mine in a clear cellophane bag (purchased at the dollar store) and topped the treat off with an old-fashioned-looking yarn tie. You might also consider making cellophane bags filled with vintage candies and a Polaroid of the mom-to-be.

When we planned the party's decor, I suggested you ask guests to bring photos of their loved ones and children to hang on a clothespin banner at the party. If they do, one of the day's activities should be a half hour dedicated to story telling and sharing advice for the new mommy. Once that is over, have each guest fill out our fill-in-the-blank Wishes for Baby card (you can download it in blue and pink or brown and orange for free), collect the cards, and have the mother-to-be or grandmother-to-be read the wishes out loud to the whole group. There won't be a dry eye in the house.

We've mapped out the theme and invitations, as well as ways to set a nostalgic ambiance and décor, which means it's time to address delicious vittles! Evoke tasty memories with the mom-to-be's favorite childhood recipes (this requires a call to grandma or a close family member) or dish up a classic, no-frills menu that's light and easy to create.

• Spread: Serve heirloom tomato tarts, mango caprese salad, French bread, and a cheese plate.
• Drinks: Italian fruit punch made with limoncello, champagne, sparkling water, and cappuccinos.
• Treats: If you don't have time to bake, pick up colorful macaroons or any cookies grandma might make (like oatmeal raisin or chocolate chip). If you're willing to put on your baking hat, try simple Rice Krispie Treats on sticks.

It's time to dress that bump up for the heirloom baby shower. Grab grandma's best and some baubles from mama for a spectacular outfit that will leave the guests gasping at your vintage style. The $48 lace baby doll dress from Urban Outfitters won't break the bank but will provide ample room for that growing tummy. Pair it with one of granny's old beaded sweaters for a classic look. Finally, accent the ensemble with an antique-looking pin, a classic pair of pearl-drop earrings, and some flashy gold ballet flats. Just remember, the older the better for this baby-to-be!

The heirloom shower is all about cherished childhood memories and passing down treasured items or advice instead of consumer goods. It is a sweet, coin-saving incentive to gather friends to celebrate baby instead of a party focused on presents. Guests are asked to bring an heirloom or lightly worn hand-me-down item in lieu of a fancy new gift to this recession-friendly bash, and should be encouraged to recycle and re-gift the many expensive baby items some of us only use for weeks — if ever. These could range from larger items like a stroller or car seat (although this should be arranged in advance), to smaller items like a precious rattle, holiday photo outfit, handmade quilt or a stuffed animal. Those who don't have children or a closet full of goodies are encouraged to bring a memento from their own childhood like their favorite book or booties, or make a contribution to the party, such as a tasty dish or beverage.

Limit the guest list to family and friends who won't be uncomfortable sharing an heirloom item, but feel free to open up the list to a healthy number your venue can house given the low-cost focus of this bash.
