Want a Bright Baby? Feed Her Fish Food

Fish is what's for dinner.

Fish is what's for dinner. A new article on Time.com suggests that moms should introduce omega-3 fatty acid-rich fish to wee ones' diets at the same time as chicken and beef to boost a child's brain power and get her accustomed to the taste.

According to Susan Brewer, a professor of food science at the University of Illinois, ingesting omega-3s, particularly DHA, will provide infants with the levels they need for proper brain development. She's developing a fishy baby puree that combines wild salmon, salmon bonemeal, and roe (to boost nutrient levels) into a meal that "tastes more like salmon and cream-cheese dip than plain salmon." It may be a while before her creation hits store shelves, but Happy Baby ($17 for 16) currently has one on the market. When did your children start eating fish?

Keep reading for a basic fish puree recipe.

Annabel Karmel's Food Gadgets Get New Moms Chopping!

Kiddie cooking guru Annabel Karmel is helping new moms get busy in the kitchen.

Kiddie cooking guru Annabel Karmel is helping new moms get busy in the kitchen. She's teamed up with baby manufacturer Infantino to launch Make it Easy, a line of seven baby food prep items that include a masher and bowl, a food mill, freezer- and microwave-safe food pots, a microwave steam dish, a lunch box, and cube trays for freezing fresh creations. The products will be available at Babies R Us stores next month, but we got a sneak peek at the brightly colored pieces and found them to be surprisingly durable, given their cute design.

Who is this product designed for? Moms and dads who want to prepare their lil ones' foods on their own, rather than from a jar or packet.

Is it practical? The seven pieces in the line may not be all you ever need to make your baby's food, but they are a great start. Durable, easy to clean, and easy to use, they certainly cut down on the cost of feeding your tot compared to premade versions. Each piece comes with a handful of recipes from Karmel's library of cookbooks, with detailed instructions for using the tool.

What could be better? I wish the line was more extensive. While a masher and a food mill are great, they take time to use, and a handheld blender would be a nice, faster addition.

Would I buy it? Yes! In particular the silicone Food Cube Tray ($10), which is perfectly sized for babies' meals and easy to clean, and the Puree Pops kit ($9), while nothing new in the world of homemade popsicles, is designed for smaller mouths and teethers. After testing out a batch of homemade mango pops (using Karmel's included recipe) on my lil one, I'm a convert to popsicle teethers for sore gums!

Annabel Karmel Interview: Dealing With a Fussy Eater

Kids go through phases where they won't eat what is put in front of them.

Kids go through phases where they won't eat what is put in front of them. They may even turn their noses up at things they used to like opting for a slice of cheese or a handful of pretzels. This can be frustrating for parents who want to make sure their lil ones are getting the nutrients they need.

Food guru Annabel Karmel discusses picky eaters in her upcoming cookbook The Fussy Eaters' Recipe Book, 135 Quick, Tasty and Healthy Recipes that Your Kids Will Actually Eat which hits bookstores in August.

In the meantime, Karmel says she has always found children to be more interested in the food on their parents’ plates than on their own, so when possible eat as a family so your kids can see you noshing on different foods.

She also suggests making homemade versions of your child’s unhealthy favorites, introducing bright colored food and presenting it in a fun way. To see a video clip and get recipes for chicken fingers and chicken satay, read more

Delilicious: Annabel Karmel's Baby Purees

When babies are able to move from pureed fruits and vegetables to combined foods, some parents are uncomfortable with the idea of feeding their lil one jarred meats with long shelf lives.

When babies are able to move from pureed fruits and vegetables to combined foods, some parents are uncomfortable with the idea of feeding their lil one jarred meats with long shelf lives.

At the same time, moms may not think they have the time to make their own food on a daily basis. But, Annabel Karmel’s Top 100 Baby Purees ($10.20), inspires some to create the time.

Known as the British Martha Stewart for children, Karmel was a musician until she lost her first baby to a rare disease. When her second child turned into a poor eater, she was desperate to find foods that her son would eat. Unimpressed by tasteless jarred food, Karmel began developing her own recipes.

Most of the recipes which include garlic, onion and spices take less than a half of an hour to make and can be portioned out for several meals. Simply take the extra and place it in ice cube trays to freeze. Then move it to freezer bags to defrost as needed.
