Americans Are More Likely to Support Abortion After Watching 16 and Pregnant

A new study by the Public Religion Research Institute set out to determine how people's moral values impact their views on abortion.

A new study by the Public Religion Research Institute set out to determine how people's moral values impact their views on abortion. It found that knowing someone who has had an abortion and watching either 16 and Pregnant or Teen Mom on MTV significantly increase the likelihood a person will support legal abortion.

Both knowing someone who has had an abortion and watching a specific person on TV deal with an unwanted pregnancy give abortion more context. It's not surprising that when the debate is less hypothetical and more concrete, more people favor a woman's right to choose. Let's take a closer look at how these reality shows specifically shape the public's view, according to this new survey:

  • 65 percent of Americans who have seen 16 and Pregnant or Teen Mom support legal abortion in all or most cases, compared to 56 percent of the general public.
  • 48 percent of those who have watched say abortion is morally acceptable, compared to 40 percent of the public.
  • 65 percent of those who have watched the shows say health care professionals in their communities should provide abortions, compared to only 34 percent of the general public.

With the tabloid covers and pseudo-celebrity status bestowed on the teen moms, MTV has taken heat for glamorizing teen pregnancy. Do you think this study makes a positive case for the shows?

The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy Is a Fan of 16 and Pregnant — Are You?

If you glance at a newsstand, you know MTV's 16 and Pregnant and Teen Mom are fodder for the tabloids, but do the teen-pregnancy reality shows also make good teaching material?

If you glance at a newsstand, you know MTV's 16 and Pregnant and Teen Mom are fodder for the tabloids, but do the teen-pregnancy reality shows also make good teaching material? The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy thinks so. Considering the popularity of the show, the group believes adults who work with teens should use 16 and Pregnant as a learning tool. They've created discussion guides along with MTV and StayTeen.org to help.

According to The National Campaign's research, 82 percent of teens think the show helps them better understand the challenges of teen pregnancy and parenthood, while 15 percent think it glamorizes teen pregnancy. At the sex::tech conference in San Francisco last weekend, producers of the show, as well as representatives from The National Campaign, discussed what they think are the benefits of the show, in front of a skeptical audience. MTV producer Dia Sokol Savage called herself an "inadvertent activist" against teen pregnancy, while producer Morgan J. Freeman avoided an audience question about how much the teen mom stars are paid.

Kim Kardashian Markets Herself as a Sex Symbol, but Isn't a Fan of Teen Pregnancy

Kim Kardashian and her gorgeous gaggle of sisters may capitalize on the fact that sex sells, but she doesn't think teens should be getting pregnant and raising children.

Kim Kardashian and her gorgeous gaggle of sisters may capitalize on the fact that sex sells, but she doesn't think teens should be getting pregnant and raising children. Kardashian recently posted her opinion on her blog. She said:

I saw a story about a Memphis high school where 90 young female students were either pregnant or have given birth this year! I just couldn’t believe this and I find it so sad and disturbing. It seems that shows like Teen Mom are all of a sudden making teen pregnancy seem cool in the eyes of young girls. The kids from these shows are all over the news, even on the covers of magazines, and have been become almost like celebrities, but girls, these are not people you should idolize!

While the 30-year-old makes a valid point, do her actions — posing for everything from Playboy to bikini ads — speak louder than her advice?

30 Percent of Teen Pregnancies End in Abortion; Is That Surprising?

Not all teens who get pregnant become moms.

Not all teens who get pregnant become moms. About 30 percent of young women terminate their pregnancies. Tonight MTV explored the choice in No Easy Decision, a special that followed former 16 and Pregnant couple Markai and James as they made the decision to abort their second unplanned pregnancy. And the program showed how the parents coped with the range of emotions that came with doing so while raising their baby daughter, Za'karia.

MTV's "No Easy Decision" Special Will Tackle Teen Abortion

Not all teens who get pregnant become moms.

Not all teens who get pregnant become moms. Some young women choose to put their children up for adoption, and others terminate their pregnancies. While MTV has explored the expectant phase, mothering, and the process of adoption, next week the network will cover abortion with No Easy Decision. According to EW:

The special, airing Dec. 28 at 11:30 p.m., will follow one former 16 and Pregnant subject, Markai, as she wrestles with the decision after becoming pregnant for a second time. Dr. Drew Pinsky will also talk with young women who, like 27 percent of teens who end up with unplanned pregnancies, have chosen to end them. MTV sources say the documentary will tackle all sides of the issue, including the importance of contraception and the devastating effects of facing such a decision.

Are Parents to Blame If Live-In Boyfriend Gets Teen Pregnant?

Is cohabitation the precursor to teen pregnancy?

Is cohabitation the precursor to teen pregnancy? Last night's episode of MTV's 16 & Pregnant followed Megan, 16, and her live-in boyfriend Nathan, 19. The couple conceived their baby while living under the same roof, since Megan's mother allowed Nathan to move in (because he was arguing with his own parents about playing video games) while her husband was stationed in Afghanistan. When Megan's father came home on military leave, he voiced his disappointment that the parents-to-be could no longer be kids. That said, isn't it rather adult to allow two teens to room together?Photos copyright 2010 MTV

Teen Pregnancy Is a Fact of Life?

Teen Pregnancy Is a Fact of Life?

There have always been teen moms, and it's likely that there always will be. While some women postpone having kids until they are in their 30s and 40s, it's also a time when women become grandparents. Everything from sex education (or lack there of) to social-economic situation to the media has been blamed for teen pregnancy and while society keeps searching for causes one thing is certain — under-aged girls will continue to give birth. Juno won an Academy Award and received three Oscar nominations. When Sarah Palin's daughter's Bristol's pregnancy caused a stir during the last election, President Obama reminded the world that his own mother was 19 when he was born. All this begs the question, are we fretting over something that will never change? Or should we continue to fight the alarming statistics because there's something unsettling about children having children? Check out the hot topics we've rounded up to get moms discussing the issue.

Should Teen Moms Be Directed Toward Adoption?

Last night's episode of 16 and Pregnant was a tearjerker as teen mom Lori passed her newborn, Aidan, off to a loving couple during an open-adoption ceremony.

Last night's episode of 16 and Pregnant was a tearjerker as teen mom Lori passed her newborn, Aidan, off to a loving couple during an open-adoption ceremony. While the 17-year-old was in a rocky relationship (at best) with her son's father, Cory, and not in a position to take care of herself let alone the baby, it was her parents who strongly urged the adoption. Explaining that they would be happy to be grandparents but not the primary caretakers of the infant, Lori's parents told her she needed to make a plan to raise the child outside of their home if she kept him. After some persuasion, Lori and Cory both conceded to the adoption, with the latter calling Lori's father to let him know he would sign the papers. Do you think teen parents should be urged to give up their parental rights?

MTV's 16 & Pregnant: Just Fame For Expectant Teens?

Season 2 of MTV's 16 & Pregnant is off to an explosive start!

Season 2 of MTV's 16 & Pregnant is off to an explosive start! In the first episode, we watched baby mama Janelle disrespect her own mother and then expect her to care for the newborn so the teen could go out partying. Last night, 16-year-old Nikkole shrugged at the father of her infant's disgraceful behavior toward both her and her supportive mother. I was initially horrified by the first season, but quickly warmed up to the show and its stars — even rooting for them as they made their ways as Teen Moms. Do you think 16 & Pregnant offers an invaluable education to its viewers, or is it just giving pregnant teens an hour of unwarranted fame?
