Julianne Moore Has Children on Her Mind

Updated 06/18/09 8:05 AM · Posted by LilSugar · 0 comments

Julianne Moore believes that children are our future and is doing all she can to ensure that they make it. The Academy Award nominated actress serves as a Save the Children artist ambassador and presented the agency's "The Disaster Decade: Lessons Unlearned for the United States" report recently.

According to the text, only seven out of 50 states meet the minimum preparedness standards for protecting children during disasters, which includes effective systems for family reunification and shelters that separate tots from adults to keep them safe from predators. Moore and Save the Children are now lobbying Congress to better prepare for helping children during hurricanes, wildfires, the recession and the like.

The mother of two – Caleb, 11, and Liv, 7 – plans her filming schedules around her offspring and is often seen shuttling them to school. She is an outspoken supporter of the TS Alliance to raise awareness of tuberous sclerosis and has penned two books about life as a redheaded child, Freckleface Strawberry and Freckleface Strawberry and the Dodgeball Bully.

Are Modern Dads the Housewives of This Generation?

Updated 06/18/09 7:32 AM · Posted by LilSugar · 6 comments

Women spent generations asserting their value in the home and now that some of their spouses have taken on more child-rearing responsibilities, many men are realizing how undervalued being the primary caretaker (or equally sharing the job) can be.

From Harper's Bazaar's photo shoot portraying Chris Noth as Mr. Mom to Michael Lewis's recently published book and essays on fatherhood, Home Game: An Accidental Guide to Fatherhood, men are finding that daddy duty doesn't warrant a round of applause. Lewis argues that since new-era pops are becoming more involved in their tot's lives, they have been thrown from their place of power in the household and placed in one of submissive duty, simply following their wives' childcare directives and becoming little more than the equivalent of hired help.

While moms have suffered from the unappreciated-housewife complex for years, modern dads appear to be getting a taste of it now. Are involved dads being taken of advantage of by their unsuspecting wives?

Kate Gosselin Met Her Match in Paul Sr. of American Chopper

Updated 06/15/09 10:49 AM · Posted by LilSugar · 4 comments

Jon and Kate Plus 8's feisty matriarch met her match last Thursday when American Chopper's patriarch, Paul Tuetul, Sr. and his sons motored up to the Gosselin's abode. While the muscle men were there to build a bike for Jon, it seemed like the trio meshed better with Kate. Famous for his bike shop antics and explosive temper with his sons — Pauly and Mikey — maybe Paul Sr.'s bark is louder than his bite because he playfully interacted with the sextuplets. The no nonsense guy also persuaded Kate to become a biker chick for a ride out on the open road. And, the Tuetuls even surprised the outspoken mama with a pink personalized scooter. We can't wait to see how the family's version of the episode turns out when it airs tonight!

First Year Vision Checks Are a Sight For Sore Eyes

Updated 06/14/09 5:05 AM · Posted by LilSugar · 0 comments

"Peek-a-boo! I see you!!" But just how well does baby see mama? While parents book pediatrician appointments months in advance, most tots don’t visit an optometrist until they are well over a year old unless their doctor suspects a problem.

According to the American Optometric Association, by the age of six months, lil ones have reached enough developmental milestones to warrant a first eye assessment. Given that most insurance companies don’t cover the cost of these initial vision exams, the organization’s foundation has created InfantSee – a free, one-time, comprehensive eye assessment for infants in their first year of life. Through the InfantSee program, doctors check lil eyes for signs of vision problems, such as strabismus (crossed-eyes), amblyopia (lazy eye) and diseases of the eye that can lead to future vision problems.

Did You Dream Feed Your Babe Off to La La Land?

Updated 06/14/09 11:57 AM · Posted by LilSugar · 3 comments

Does pumping your infant full of food right before bed help him sleep longer? Many mamas claim this is true. Whether they follow an on-demand feeding regimen or a more scheduled one, lots opt to rouse their lil ones right before mom and pops are ready to call it a night and stick a bottle or nipple in the babe's mouth for one last feeding. Most tot's sucking reflex is so strong that they can down an entire feeding without ever opening their eyes to see what they are doing. Parents that opt to go this route say it helps train the baby to sleep during the overnight hours while giving the grown-ups a good stretch of shut-eye.

A colleague told me that the dream feed was one of her most cherished hours once she returned to work, saying:

I continued dream-feeding my son for at least a month longer than I needed to because it was such a special time for me. My husband was asleep, my son was in my arms quiet and happily sucking away and I could take in his changing features and wonderful baby scent without the phone ringing or someone asking me for something. It was only after the doctor told me he was getting plenty of milk during his awake hours that I finally gave it up reluctantly.

Sex After Baby Seminars Are a Quick Fix For Stagnant Couples

Updated 06/11/09 9:05 AM · Posted by LilSugar · 0 comments

If you've tried the aphrodisiacs, lingerie, and date nights and still don't seem to be bringing sexy back into your bedroom, bring on an expert!

Marriage and sex therapists help couples sort out the barriers in their pre-baby lives, but couples who know what the problem is and are looking for a quick fix may want to seek out a weekend-long seminar.

Carrie Grange Isaacson, better known as the Baby Maven, offers a number of seminars around the country and believes that strong relationships, including an active sex life, make for better parenting. Her current lecture, "Bootie After Baby," teaches couples how to flirt after marriage, how to turn overtures into invitations, and how to reintroduce passion while there is a baby crying in the next room.

Would you consider attending a sex after baby seminar to get grooving again?
