From the Community: Exercises to Avoid Later in Pregnancy

Recently, OnSugar blogger Coach Lark Says offered advice on how to work out while you're pregnant and in your first trimester.

Recently, OnSugar blogger Coach Lark Says offered advice on how to work out while you're pregnant and in your first trimester. Here's a follow-up post with more advice on exercises to avoid in your second and third trimesters.

In my last post, I went over the benefits to exercising while pregnant and listed some basic guidelines.

In the second and third trimester, you should limit or avoid altogether:

  1. Supine (back lying) exercises, especially exercises where the legs are not moving. These can cause some circulatory problems with blood returning back to your heart from your uterus.

Two more exercises to limit in your second and third trimesters after the break.

How Yoga Became One OnSugar Blogger's Saving Grace

OnSugar blogger — and yoga instructor — Yoga Off the Mat shared the following post, which was written by one of his students. It's an inspirational story about the life-changing effects of yoga.

I used to be a snob when it came to yoga. I figured that if you weren't sweating, struggling and in pain, then it wasn't a workout. The way I grew up, exercise meant running until you threw up. It's the Canadian way. I always thought that if I tried yoga, it would have to be incorporated into my schedule as a last resort. I would do everything else first, work out at the gym as much as possible, and if there was time at the end of the week I would maybe try and kinda sorta attempt to go to a yoga class. Maybe. Wow. What a smart plan.

I think it was fate that led me to become hooked on yoga. About a year ago everything in my world seemed to go south. The details don't really matter at this point, but basically my love life blew up in my face, I left my management company, my visa work permit was denied . . . twice, I got audited . . . twice, my Dad and I got in a relationship-ending fight, and I had no upcoming singing work. At all. Zero. Zip. Also, my roommate kindly let me know that he didn't want me living in my apartment anymore. Awesome. When it rains, it pours right? All this crap took a big toll on a lot of things in my life, but mostly on my confidence. It just vanished. Disappeared and I didn't really know where it went, or more importantly, how to find it again.

Running Nina Suggests You Read Born to Run

At the beginning of the month, I suggested FitSugar readers create their own running blog using OnSugar — it's so easy!

At the beginning of the month, I suggested FitSugar readers create their own running blog using OnSugar — it's so easy! Running Nina was inspired to start her own so she could blog about her running and fitness adventures in Chicago. Here's the latest post from the Running Nina blog, reviewing the book Born to Run.

Born to Run started with McDougall asking a simple question, "Why does my foot hurt?" This question led him on a crazy journey to the Copper Canyons in Mexico, where the Tarahumara Indians live. The Tarahumara are a tribe of super-athletes who have, for hundreds of years, been running hundreds of miles without stopping. They run on some of the roughest terrain on Earth and they do it practically barefoot. In addition, they are incredibly healthy and immune to diseases that spread like wildfire in today's society.

In Case You Didn't Know, Yoga Is the Secret to Longevity

I've become a big fan of the OnSugar blog Yoga Off the Mat, but I think this most recent post is my favorite.

I've become a big fan of the OnSugar blog Yoga Off the Mat, but I think this most recent post is my favorite.

My great friend / yoga colleague Cindy Storman told me a wonderful story recently. I just had to share this with everyone.

I've known Cindy for almost a decade now, and she has not aged a bit. Good genes and longevity run in her family.

So picture Cindy, at her Great Aunt Esther's 100th birthday party. Since her Aunt Esther is in such great shape, both physically and mentally, she wanted to mark this milestone, and a huge party was thrown in her honor. Over 100 of her family and friends joined for the celebration.

During the party, she was sitting in a chair with her tiara on. Her many children, grandchildren, great gran children, and the children of their children all gathered around her. They began to share stories about her through the years... all on film.

At one point, Cindy asked her Auntie, "What do you think the secret to your longevity is?"

Esther thought for a moment, and then said "Oh, it's the yoga, it's definitely the yoga."

Cindy was shocked. Cindy has taught yoga for more than ten years, and had never heard her Auntie mention yoga to her. Auntie continued to explain wisely how you have to do one side, and then the other. And you have to do it reeeaaal slow. And you have to have a good yoga teacher, "like my Cindy over here." (This made Cindy smile.)

Then Cindy asked, "So, exactly how long have you been doing yoga?"

Aunt Esther replied "Oh... about 6 months now."

I love this story. You are never too old to start a yoga practice!
