'Tis the season for your lil one to come down with a nasty bug. It's not always easy to know if you should keep her home from school, but there are a few telltale signs and symptoms that warrant a sick day — and a spelling test is not one of them. Too many BMs would drive me nuts as a rule. I hope they made exceptions for medical conditions. My son had a bowel obstruction that caused him to leak constantly, he'd never have been able to go if they didn't make exceptions. My daughter just naturally goes a lot at this point. *lol*

My day care would send us home for the following: Fever over 100.0 Constantly runny nose Too many B.M. Kept out 24 hours after start of antibiotic ( which usually meant 2 days b/c even though it might have been 24 hours, don't bring the kid in a noon the next day) Let's just say I always had a shortage of vacation time.

Ask if they'll let you describe the symptoms over the phone and fax a note, since they know you have a history of recognizing the difference between symptoms that need a doctor and those that don't.

A lot of the time the restrictions on coming to school often didnt coordinate with the time they allot you to stay out. Alot of schools we went to had tight restrictions, 99 fever, no coughing/etc, that would force you to stay out over their approved amount of time. We would end up going to the doctor for doctors notes for colds. They would always ask why we bothered paying the copay for a visit for something that ddint require antibiotics.

Ours have to be fever-free or vomit-free for 24 hours as well.

Yeah, it changes with every school district. When I was a kid, you had to be kept or sent home if you had a 100 degree fever or above. You also had to be fever free for 24 hours before returning to school...so if you were okay in the day, and your fever spiked at night, you could not go to school the next morning. As for strep, 24 to 36 hours is okay, but it also depends on your symptoms. If your kid has strep and is running a fever, that's different than just strep. I never stayed home because of a cough, but if my kids cough lasted for 5 days and it was pretty bad, I'd have him or her checked out, though. BUT, parents also need to be careful about why they keep their kids from school. School districts in most places I know of (probably everywhere) have a limit of how many days a kid can be out of school. When I was younger I think it was 14, and when I got to high school it was 7. Obviously with a doctors note, it's a different story.

These are subjective and depend on your school's policy. Ours states that they can't have a fever of 100 or above. And a bad cough that you know is asthma or allergies need not be kept home if the school is up to date on how to treat it and if they get breathing treatments at school, things like that.
