Modern Family: Is it True That You Can't Have Two Fun Parents?

Do you need at least one adult in a family? Last night, Claire's fun factor came into question when she was talking to Luke about his happy-go-lucky father Phil on Modern Family. The mother of three said:

Let me let you in on a little secret Luke. When I met your dad I was fun too, but I had to give all that up because you can't have two fun parents. It's a carnival.

Do you agree with her?

I don't think there should be a 'fun' parent at all. It implies, as lickety said, that one parent doesn't set boundaries and lets the kids run wild, while the other is left to enforce rules. We're both very 'fun' with our kid, but we agree on rules an boundaries, too.

You can be fun and still be an effective parent. I don't yell at my kids, and I don't like it when other people do. It's not hard to be patient and set an example of how to behave. But if one parent refuses to set any rules or acknowledge any boundaries, it puts the other parent in the position of being the bad guy. So I suppose it depends on how the other parent conducts themselves.
