Would You Attend Your Child's Commitment Ceremony?

Most parents dream of their child's wedding — the day that they hand him or her off to start a family of their own. They picture their daughter walking down the aisle or their son standing at attention. But, some moms and dads can't bring themselves to attend their offspring's union if it isn't what they envisioned.

It was wedded bliss for Kevin Walker and Scotty Wandell on the season finale of Brothers and Sisters and while the couple's commitment ceremony was thrown by Kevin's ecstatic mother, Nora, Scotty's parents refused to attend. Despite Kevin's heartfelt invitation, they could not come to terms with their son's gay marriage.

Would sexual preference keep you from your child's wedding?

I would absolutely go to my child's wedding no matter what their sexual preference. It's my job as a parent to love and support my son no matter what path he chooses in life.

Of course. Life's too short not to be there for your children just because they dont have the same sexual preference as their parents.

I would never miss my child's wedding! I hope that she grows up in a world where questions like these are not even asked. Luckily I live in San Francisco where being gay is part of the normal way of life. I hope that my daughter thinks of being gay as normal and would not be fearful of loving another woman.

I'll be honest and admit that it would be hard for me to accept that my only child would be gay. But if it's a choice that makes him happy and his significant other makes him happy and they are willing to invest in each other's lives by taking this huge step -- I wouldn't miss for the world.

I would certainly attend my child's commitment ceremony/wedding (by that time maybe). I think this is an easier yes for me than for parent's of a generation or 2 ago.

well i like to think that i will love my future sil/dil! but if i didn't i think i would still go to the wedding. having a child that is gay wouldn't prevent me from being part of the important moments of their life (is that really an issue any more, it's not in california). my child's poor choice in a partner (someone who is abusive, or addicted) might keep me away though.

Nope- wedding, commitment ceremony- whatever it's called. I'm there, 100% supportive of my boys. All I ask is that one of them has kids one day (the usual way, or adopted, or whatever) so that I can be a grandma.

Absolutely agree with the others. My children's happiness and sense of fullfilment in their lives is what is important to me, if that means they're happiest and most fulfilled in a homosexual relationship then I'd support them 100%. And I would absolutely attend their commitment ceremony or gay wedding, I'd be proud to.
