What's the Hardest Part About Balancing Career and Kids?

A working mama is hardly ever off the clock. Though there are plenty of tips, apps, and products designed to make a WOHM's life easier, it's tough. Some women feel guilty for not staying home with their kids while others love the benefits of a profession Either way, the mamas have to figure out how to get everything taken care of at the office and at home! What do you think is the toughest part?

Realizing that there is no balance is the first step in recognizing and accepting how challenging it is to be a mom/have a career. I work from home, with 3 kids 5 and under. Except for the few hours the two oldest are at school, I have no time to cohesively manage my life, my home or my relationships. I am trying to control things less and just go with the flow. Be less temperamental and irritated and more relaxed/in tune with what is happening right at that moment. This is a battle I cannot win in the short run. Hopefully I can win the war!

The commute on the train -- I can't be productive with work stuff (I don't have a work laptop), and it's also not time spent with my kid. I'm working on trying to relax and think of it as me time. But when a train is late or has an issue, it's really frustrating to be delayed from picking up my daughter.

I think the hardest part of being a working mom is when you've worked everything out and go into the day thinking it's going to be pretty seamless and then something happens and it all goes haywire. A mother's ability to adapt is amazing!

I agree with the balance comment - especially with respect to finding time for yourself (and, for that matter, your SO). I have to tell myself it's ok if my son is in daycare for an extra hour while I go to the gym, because I need that time to keep myself healthy and sane. That said, it took me a long time to get to this point. And even now I feel a bit guilty when I pick him up and he's the last kid in his class still at daycare. Fortunately he's very happy at his "school" so that makes it a little less painful for me.

I think the toughest part of being a working mom is trying to find balance. It's hard to be up all night with a sick child and then be coherent at work. It's also hard to have a stressful day at work and separate that from your kids when you get home.
